Full Job Description Position:

Municipal Fleet Mechanic Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled mechanic to inspect, maintain, and repair city vehicles and equipment, including trucks, police cars, and snowplows. You will run diagnostics, fix mechanical and electrical issues, respond to emergency breakdowns, and keep clear repair records to ensure our fleet runs safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

Diagnose and repair engines, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, suspension, and HVAC. Use computer software and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot complex issues. Outfit specialized vehicles (e.g., police cars) with radios, emergency lights, and sirens. Prepare snow removal equipment for seasonal use. Handle road-service calls and after-hours emergency repairs as assigned. Track parts inventory, order supplies, and maintain accurate repair logs and work orders. Keep the shop clean, organized, and safe.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education:

High school diploma or GED required; trade school degree/certification preferred.

Experience:

2+ years repairing heavy-duty trucks and equipment (or an equivalent mix of education and experience).

Licenses:

Valid Illinois Driver's License and Illinois CDL.

Skills & Gear:

Training in diesel repair and welding preferred. ASE certifications preferred. Must provide your own hand tools. Steel-toed boots required.

Physical Ability:

Able to lift heavy equipment, work in tight spaces, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
