Job description:

The Township of Sewickley, Westmoreland County, is accepting applications for an operator/road crew worker. A valid CDL A or CDL B license is required. This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $23.08, excellent benefits, and eligibility for participation in the Pennsylvania Municipal Retirement System after successfully completing a probationary period. Summary:

Responsible for maintaining township roads and operating township equipment by performing the following tasks. Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Operates heavy equipment and trucks.

• 2. Sets out signs, cones, and flags motorists around work zones.
• 3. Removes debris from drain structures.
• 4. Inspects, cleans, and repairs township structures as needed.
• 5. Performs roadside landscaping work as needed.
• 6. Erects, installs, or repairs guardrails, road shoulders, berms, road signs, etc.
• 7. Operates small and heavy equipment to sweep debris, repair roads, clean ditches, install drainage, and mow grass.
• 8. Be available to work overtime before and after normal, assigned shifts and weekends, especially during winter months.
• 9. Work at the community park and pool, cleaning park facilities, cleaning pool, general maintenance, emptying garbage cans, mowing, and weed-eating.
• 10.

Performs routine maintenance, at times using a variety of equipment, including, but not limited to: roadways, municipal facilities, park grounds and facilities, rights-of-way and other public property, stormwater facilities. 11. Operates snow removal vehicles and related equipment during the winter to maintain streets and public grounds, including public parking lots, as well as repairs mailboxes damaged during snowplow operations. 12. Assists with the placement of bituminous asphalt involving patching or paving operations on roads. 13. Follows safety requirements, including, but not limited to: immediately reporting all accidents, unsafe conditions, and dangerous acts to the Public Works Director. 14. Responds within three days to all PA one-calls by identifying and marking Township utilities. 15. Completes daily work assignments by recording job assignments, performing the necessary and required work in an acceptable manner, and reporting to the Public Works Director the status of the assignment in addition to any issues or concerns discovered while performing assignments. 16. Responds to call-outs after normal working hours. 17. Performs all other duties as required.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

a) Knowledge of general construction, repair, and maintenance principles, as well as methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities; b) Knowledge of general equipment, machinery, and tools used in construction activities; c) Knowledge of equipment operation, occupational hazards, and proper safety procedures to prevent workplace hazards; d) Ability to acquire and retain knowledge related to the methods and techniques of storm sewer repair, maintenance, and installation, and roadway repair and maintenance; e) Ability to learn proper operation and care of heavy-duty equipment and machinery; f) Ability to work safely and effectively communicate verbally, in person and over the phone, and by radio; g) Ability to work without direct supervision and to exercise judgment, initiative, and discretion to make proper decisions; h) Ability to address the general public tactfully and courteously, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, and the general public; i) Ability to apply knowledge of operations and procedures to make consistent decisions; j) Ability to work in a variety of outdoor weather and variable environmental conditions; k) Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods of time; l) Ability to work safely in the workplace, outdoors and indoors, and near moving mechanical parts, as well as moving vehicles; m) Ability to be subject to possible exposure to hazardous materials and infectious agents; n) Ability to balance, climb, squat, kneel, bend, crawl, stretch, maneuver in tight spaces, and use hands and fingers to handle equipment to perform duties; o) Ability to occasionally lift and/or move at least fifty (50) pounds with or without assistance; p) Ability to perform work requiring close, distant, peripheral, and color vision capabilities.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Class A or B CDL license is required.

• Ability to communicate with supervisors and co-workers.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Ability to inspect equipment and structures for problems or defects.
