Job Description
Summary Objective:
The purpose of this position is to maintain the Detention Center and its operations through inspection, preventative maintenance, repair, when required replacement of the defective or broken item to the varied systems of the Detention Center, and maintain records of all inspections, maintenance, repairs, replacements, and permits in accordance with the SC Minimum Standards for Local Detention Facilities, International Building Code, DHEC Regulations, and Fire Codes as relates to an I-3 rated facility. Supervise trustee laborers assigned to assist the maintenance supervisor in maintaining the systems of the Detention Center. This individual will be required to work independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.Essential Functions:
The essential job requirements listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class, as necessary.- As required by the SC Minimum Standards and Fire Codes, inspect and maintain the following items and records of their inspection and operation at the time frames required and oversee maintenance contracts for these items as required: o Emergency Power Generator o Emergency Lighting System o Fire Extinguishers o Building Fire Rated Walls and Doors o Fire Alarm o Boilers o Detention Locks, Doors, and Locking System o CCTV Camera System o Pneumatic System o Security Gates and Operators.
- Perform general electrical, plumbing, and HVAC maintenance work and repair to maintain the operational capability facility and operation of the housing units and cells in the Detention Center as well as the other areas of the Law Enforcement Center.
- Prepare requisitions and obtain purchase orders to purchase required maintenance and repair items.
- Supervise inmate labor assigned to assist Maintenance Supervisor in completing the inspections, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems within the facility in accordance with the guidelines and laws governing inmate labor.
- Prepare estimates and/or obtain estimates to complete repairs as necessary.
- Work with maintenance contract vendors to ensure contracted maintenance work is completed in accordance with the contracts.
- May be required to perform difficult and complex maintenance and construction duties of the department, including reading and interpreting manuals and complex construction plans and specifications.
- Maintain records of submitted maintenance requests and completion of their repairs.
- Communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, Detention Center employees and other County employees, other government agencies, architects, engineers, etc.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires a minimum of a High School Diploma.
- Requires a valid Driver's License.
- Requires a minimum of four (4) years of facility maintenance experience, construction experience, Building Superintendent, or a demonstration of progressively responsible experience as an assistant to a building superintendent, facilities maintenance supervisor, or other position requiring similar knowledge, abilities, skills, or experience.
- Prior experience in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, building inspections, and maintenance or formal training in these areas is considered a significant plus.
