WHO WE ARE
Motor Machining is the shop other shops call when the job is hard. We machine heavy-duty diesel and automotive engines in Manitowoc — blocks, cranks, heads, line boring, sleeving, valve work — and we built that reputation one part at a time, by refusing to send out work we wouldn't put our own name on. We're a crew of about ten, small enough that everyone's work is visible. And we're not coasting on how it's always been done: we're building the systems — real processes, honest numbers, scorecards people use — that make good work repeatable instead of heroic. If you want your fingerprints on how a growing shop runs, this is the seat. We hire, promote, and part ways over six values: Leave It Better
- Do Right, Always
- Raise Everyone
- Find The Better Way
- Move With Purpose
- Never Settle.
2.
WHO YOU ARE
▪ You own the promised date. When a job will slip, the customer hears it early, from you. ▪ You'd rather build people than be the hero. You want to know who's ready to step up. ▪ You have the hard conversation the same week, directly, without drama. ▪ You're decisive. Work never sits waiting on you. ▪ You hold the line under pressure. Your standard doesn't drop when the shop is slammed. 3.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
▪ A working leader. Runs the floor, and can still run the machines. ▪ [5+] years hands-on in a machine shop or engine rebuilding, across multiple core operations. ▪ Heavy-duty diesel knowledge — components, specs, and the tolerances they demand. ▪ Can run a schedule — build the daily board, protect promised dates, keep every station loaded. ▪ [2+] years leading or training technicians, or clear readiness to start. ▪ Precision fluency — prints, OEM specs, micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators. ▪ Clean paperwork. Work orders, time punches, cost centers. We manage by real data. 4.
WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR
▪ Someone who wants to be left alone on a bench. Here, the leading is the real work. ▪ A manager who won't get dirty. The crew will know within a week. ▪ Someone who avoids conflict. Standards you won't enforce aren't standards. ▪ A "that's how we've always done it" technician. Experience shouldn't block improvement. ▪ Anyone unable to maintain accurate hours or paperwork. That's an integrity issue here, not a clerical one. 5.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
▪ Building the daily board — setting production goals each morning and reporting against them. ▪ Assigning work across cost centers — block, crank, head and valve, auto/dyno, specialty, field. ▪ Running the daily huddle and keeping jobs moving before they age past their date. ▪ Coaching the crew. Monthly one-on-ones, scorecards, and cross-training so no operation runs through one person. ▪ Hiring and holding standards. Interviewing, recommending hires and wages, issuing corrective action. ▪ Owning quality. Final say on setups, tolerances, and holds; root-causing every comeback. ▪ Bench work, roughly 10-25% of your hours — hard setups, at-risk jobs, training, coverage. ▪ Owning safety, 5S, preventive maintenance, and the accuracy of labor time before it's billed.
Measured on:
proficiency
- on-time completion
- comebacks and scrap
- safety
- time-punch accuracy
- cross-training
- retention.
