Public Works Maintenance Technician PW/3 Public Works
JOB SUMMARY
This position performs technical duties in the maintenance of city parks, grounds, and other facilities.
MAJOR DUTIES
Operates and performs routine maintenance of power equipment, including lawnmowers, weed trimmers, blowers, chain saws, tractors, and tractor attachments. Performs mowing schedule based on current weather and upcoming events Inspects stormwater drains; clears drains of debris; completes related reports. Repairs and/or replaces street signs within the city limits; installs new signage as needed. Cleans comfort station and Mulbrerry Bridge Connector facilities. Installs banners, flags, and decorations associated with holidays and events. Installs holiday decorations. Installs street barricades as needed for events, accidents, and storm damage. Paints city property. Removes dead trees or limbs from streets, right-of-way, and trails - including after hours emergencies. Assists in training new staff. Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of grounds maintenance equipment. Knowledge of grounds and facilities maintenance principles. Skill in prioritizing and organizing work. Skill in the use of hand and power tools. Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Public Works Manager and/or crew leader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The manager spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include safety guidelines and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelinesare generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to provide support for department operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, vendors, and the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
