Job Description

About the Role As a Generator Service Technician, you will handle the maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of generator systems ranging from 2KW to 3MW, operating in both shop and field settings. We are seeking a self-motivated individual who possesses strong mechanical and electrical skills, maintains a customer-first mindset, and excels at working autonomously. Candidates should bring significant experience within the generator industry or possess a background in related technical fields such as automotive, military, transportation, or commercial electrical work. Proficiency with static and automatic transfer switches, along with paralleling systems for multiple units, is highly valued. Core Responsibilities Execute maintenance and service tasks for generators in both field and shop settings. Ensure system reliability by performing engine maintenance, load bank testing, ATS repairs, and comprehensive system evaluations. Identify and resolve issues within gaseous and diesel fuel systems, performing both major and minor engine repairs. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and component-level faults to restore equipment functionality. Utilize mechanical and electrical schematics, technical manuals, and service literature to guide your work. Leverage specialized diagnostic tools and technical documentation to effectively troubleshoot machine components. Help maintain high repair standards by evaluating parts for reuse and following manufacturer guidelines. Source and install necessary replacement components to ensure optimal equipment performance. Install generator sets and peripheral equipment according to engineering specifications. Operate independently in off-site locations while maintaining high productivity levels. Document all service activities through accurate, thorough, and legible reporting. Uphold quality standards to ensure all repairs meet established operational procedures. Support team success by guiding apprentices and fellow technicians toward high-quality repair outcomes. Foster a collaborative environment by sharing troubleshooting techniques and technical insights with the team. Improve customer satisfaction by clearly explaining maintenance needs and technical findings. Act as a professional representative of our team while maintaining a positive, service-oriented approach. Participate in the required after-hours on-call rotation schedule. Adapt to irregular scheduling, including availability for holidays and weekends. Support project timelines by traveling for out-of-town assignments, including overnight stays. Promote a safe working environment by operating heavy machinery and cranes in compliance with OSHA standards. Adhere to all company safety protocols and established operational practices. Complete additional tasks as required to support business objectives. Required Qualifications Proven experience in the generator service sector or equivalent military/technical background. Strong aptitude for mechanical and electrical troubleshooting. Demonstrated history of maintaining and repairing gaseous or diesel engines. Capability to diagnose and repair complex electrical and mechanical systems. Proficiency in interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage tasks independently with minimal oversight. Skill in communicating technical information to customers and team members. Competence in the safe and proper use of diagnostic equipment and hand tools. Possession of essential hand tools, such as multimeters, socket sets, wrenches, and pliers. Commitment to following manufacturer guidelines and internal company policies. Ability to produce accurate and detailed service documentation. Physical capability to perform field service duties as required. Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites. Flexibility to work irregular hours, weekends, and participate in on-call rotations. Willingness to travel for work, including overnight stays. Preferred Qualifications Experience with automatic transfer switches (ATS). Experience with static transfer switches. Experience with multiple-unit paralleling systems. Technical or vocational schooling in electrical, mechanical, automotive, diesel, transportation, or related fields. Commercial or residential electrical experience. Military mechanical or electrical experience. Experience servicing generator systems from 2KW to 3MW. Experience with both diesel and gaseous-fueled generator systems. Experience with load banks and generator testing equipment. OSHA-related equipment operation experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude. Ability to diagnose complex engine and electrical problems. Ability to use diagnostic tools and technical documentation effectively. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to discuss abstract or complicated technical problems with peers and industry professionals. Willingness and ability to learn new technologies and systems. Desire to share technical knowledge and experience with other technicians. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Positive attitude and willingness to assist customers in resolving maintenance and repair issues. Ability to lead or direct other technicians and apprentices when needed. Ability to prioritize and complete work efficiently while maintaining safety and quality standards. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work is performed both in a shop environment and at customer/job sites. Position requires frequent travel to field locations. May require overnight travel and extended or irregular work hours. Must be available for emergency and after-hours service as part of the on-call rotation. Must be capable of working around operating engines, electrical equipment, heavy machinery, fuel systems, and industrial environments. Must be able to safely operate or work around forklifts, mobile cranes, and other heavy equipment. Must be able to use hand tools and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively. Must comply with all applicable OSHA and company safety requirements. Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude. Complete work efficiently while ensuring repairs are performed correctly and safely. Schedule & Travel Regular shop and field work. Irregular hours may be required based on customer and business needs. Weekend and holiday work may be required. Participation in an after-hours on-call rotation is required. Occasional out-of-town travel with overnight stays is required.
