Electrical Controls Technician Job description: DEEM is seeking an experienced Electrical Controls Technician to install, troubleshoot, maintain, and commission electrical control and automation systems in commercial and industrial environments. The ideal candidate has strong electrical troubleshooting skills and experience with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, control panels, sensors, and related automation equipment. DEEM is a commercial mechanical and electrical company offering HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Refrigeration, Industrial Piping, Building Automation, and Sheet Metal Installation and services. We are centrally located in Indianapolis, Indiana with satellite offices throughout the Midwest down to the southeastern United States.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical and electronic control systems. Diagnose electrical, controls, and automation system failures. Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment and automated systems. Assist with PLC/HMI programming, modifications, and diagnostics. Install and configure VFDs, sensors, relays, contactors, motor controls, and other control devices. Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control drawings. Perform control panel wiring, testing, and modifications. Perform system startup, testing, and commissioning. Troubleshoot control circuits and field devices. Support industrial automation, HVAC/building automation, and refrigeration control systems. Document service work and communicate technical issues and recommended repairs. Follow company and jobsite safety procedures.
Qualifications:
Experience with electrical controls, industrial electrical systems, automation, HVAC controls, refrigeration controls, or a related field. Strong electrical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Knowledge of relays, contactors, sensors, motor starters, VFDs, and control circuits. Ability to use electrical testing equipment, including a digital multimeter. Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer locations as required.
Preferred Experience:
Allen-Bradley PLCs and Rockwell Automation software, including RSLogix 500/5000 or Studio 5000. PLC troubleshooting or programming. FactoryTalk, Ignition, or other
HMI/SCADA
platforms. Industrial control panel wiring and
UL 508A. VFD
programming and troubleshooting. Building automation systems such as Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or Niagara. Commercial/industrial HVAC or refrigeration controls. Technical degree, apprenticeship, military technical training, or equivalent field experience
Physical Requirements:
Work prolonged hours and in confined areas Work in extreme temperatures •20°F to 120°F) Wear full PPE (hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, etc.) Climb ladders and operate aerial lifts Lift/carry 50+ lbs (help required for heavier loads) Push/pull up to 120+ lbs Perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, reaching, and crawling Drive using both hands and feet
