Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Automation Specialist is responsible for supporting the design, development, fabrication, programming, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of electrical control systems used on CTJ Energy Solutions equipment. This position combines hands-on electrical controls work with control-system design and PLC program development, including electrical drawings, control panels, instrumentation, VFDs, PLCs, HMI interfaces, and related automation components. The Automation Specialist works closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, the Panel Shop, Project Management, and field personnel to deliver safe, reliable, serviceable, and well-documented control systems that meet project and customer requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Electrical Control System Design Develop and update electrical control-system designs for packaged industrial equipment, including power distribution, motor controls, instrumentation, PLC I/O, VFDs, interlocks, alarms, and control panels. Create and revise electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, terminal plans, I/O lists, cable/interconnect details, and other supporting documentation required for fabrication and installation. Select electrical and controls components based on voltage, load, function, environmental conditions, serviceability, customer requirements, and project specifications. Review control-system designs for constructability, maintainability, safe operation, and compatibility with the mechanical equipment and process requirements. PLC Programming & Automation Development Develop, modify, document, and maintain PLC programs for equipment operating sequences, permissives, interlocks, alarms, shutdowns, process control, and machine logic. Develop and modify HMI/operator-interface applications to provide equipment status, controls, setpoints, alarms, diagnostics, and clear operator feedback. Configure and integrate VFDs, sensors, transmitters, switches, actuators, control relays, and other industrial controls components commonly used in automated systems. Perform PLC/HMI program backups, revision control, change documentation, and controlled deployment of software updates to shop and field equipment. Troubleshoot PLC logic, I/O, communications, instrumentation, and control sequences; make program or design corrections necessary to achieve reliable operation. Panel Shop & Equipment Integration Plan and coordinate work within the Panel Shop, including project priorities, required materials, shop inventory, and commonly used stock items. Interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, bills of materials, and supporting documentation submitted to the shop for construction. Perform and support fabrication, wiring, labeling, and assembly of control panels, junction boxes, interconnects, and related electrical assemblies. Run conduit, install wire and cable, terminate field devices, and complete electrical integration on manufactured equipment as required. Verify panel and equipment wiring against approved drawings and correct discrepancies before functional testing or shipment. Testing, Troubleshooting & Commissioning Perform electrical checkout, point-to-point verification, I/O testing, functional testing, and control-sequence validation prior to equipment release. Diagnose and repair electrical and controls issues on manufacturing equipment, facility equipment, packaged systems, and customer equipment as assigned. Support factory acceptance testing, equipment startup, commissioning, and field service activities, including warranty claims or customer issues when required. Work with Engineering and Manufacturing to identify root causes of controls-related problems and implement practical corrective actions. Documentation & Project Support Create and update bills of materials for control panels, electrical assemblies, automation systems, and project-specific controls components. Maintain accurate documentation of corrections, redlines, as-built drawings, field modifications, wiring changes, and software revisions in company records. Maintain organized project files for electrical drawings, PLC/HMI backups, configuration files, test records, and technical documentation for future service and reference. Coordinate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Project Management to resolve design questions, material issues, and schedule constraints affecting controls work. Provide clear technical information to internal teams and customers regarding equipment operation, controls changes, troubleshooting findings, and required follow-up. Leadership, Safety & Continuous Improvement Provide training, leadership, and technical guidance to employees working in or assisting the Panel Shop and electrical controls function. Perform work in accordance with company safety requirements and accepted electrical practices; identify and escalate unsafe conditions before work proceeds. Promote consistent panel-building, wiring, labeling, programming, testing, and documentation standards across controls projects. Identify opportunities to standardize electrical designs, reusable PLC logic, panel layouts, component selections, and troubleshooting methods to improve quality and efficiency. Manage multiple projects and priorities while communicating status, risks, material needs, and technical issues in a timely manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 3-5
years of experience in a manufacturing environment working with industrial electrical systems, controls, automation, or as an industrial electrician. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical prints, wiring diagrams, schematics, control narratives, and supporting technical documents. Strong understanding of PLCs, VFDs, instrumentation, motor controls, relays, sensors, and other industrial electrical controls components commonly found in automated systems. Hands-on experience developing, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC programs and control logic; ability to understand equipment sequences, interlocks, alarms, and shutdown functions. Ability to develop or revise electrical control-system documentation and translate equipment requirements into practical panel, wiring, and controls solutions. Excellent troubleshooting, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills; able to work with limited supervision, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
On-time completion of electrical design, programming, panel-shop, and commissioning deliverables First-pass success rate for electrical checkout, I/O testing, and functional testing PLC/HMI software quality, revision control, and backup completeness Electrical drawing, as-built, and project documentation accuracy Panel wiring and controls rework / defect rate Bill-of-material accuracy and controls material readiness Timely resolution of manufacturing, startup, warranty, and customer controls issues Reduction of recurring electrical and automation failures through corrective action and standardization Adherence to electrical safety, workmanship, labeling, testing, and documentation standards
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in office, Panel Shop, fabrication-shop, manufacturing, and field environments with exposure to energized electrical equipment, machinery, welding, grinding, noise, heat, and industrial operations. Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, working around equipment, and performing hands-on wiring, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities at varying elevations and locations. Must be able to use required PPE, follow electrical and site safety requirements, and travel to customer or field locations when assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals to perform essential functions.
AUTHORITY
The Automation Specialist has authority, within delegated project and engineering controls, to make electrical and PLC/HMI corrections necessary to support safe and reliable equipment operation, require correction of wiring or controls work that does not conform to approved documentation, and stop or escalate work when an electrical safety, control-system integrity, or equipment-protection concern exists.
