Job Description

Machinist III This position is located On-site in our Bayou La Batre, AL location. The Outside Machinist performs precision machining, alignment, and mechanical work onboard vessels and in the yard. This role focuses on installation, field machining, and alignment of propulsion systems, machinery foundations, and critical equipment.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Perform field machining, flange facing, line boring, and drilling operations onboard vessels or in construction areas. Install and align propulsion components (shafts, bearings, couplings, engines, Z-drives). Execute foundation machining and choking preparation for machinery installations. (directly aligned with propulsion foundation work referenced in internal planning discussions) Interpret work packages and coordinate with engineering and production teams. Set up portable machining equipment and verify alignment tolerances. Participate in equipment alignment (laser alignment, dial indicators). Troubleshoot fit-up issues and make field modifications as needed. Support loadouts, installations, and final shaft alignment processes. Ensure all work complies with marine standards and QA requirements Qualifications / Skills /
Experience:
Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on machining experience. Ability to work from drawings and alignment procedures. Experience with portable machining equipment. Proficiency with alignment tools and measurement techniques. Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and outdoor conditions.
Preferred Experience:
Marine propulsion system installation and alignment experience. Familiarity with chock fast/grouting systems and foundation preparation. Birdon offers a full benefits package including: Health/Dental/Vision EAP/Life
