CNC Machinist Job Description This role is a hands-on CNC Machinist position in a dynamic job shop environment, responsible for setting up, operating, and performing quality checks on CNC mills and lathes. You will work from a digital job assignment system, handle multiple setups per day, and ensure parts meet tight tolerance requirements while making on-the-fly program and machining adjustments. Responsibilities Review daily job assignments on a work tablet and prioritize tasks based on production requirements. Set up, operate, and monitor a cell of CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components. Work with CNC machines from brands such as Hurco and Brother, using both conversational and G&M code programming controls. Edit CNC programs directly at the machine to adjust part features and ensure proper machining operations. Adjust feeds and speeds to optimize machining performance, part quality, and tool life. Perform quality control checks, including first article inspections, to verify parts meet specifications. Complete between 2 and 10 setups per day, depending on part run times and job complexity. Maintain the ability to hold tight tolerances of +/- 0.005 inches consistently across production runs. Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to determine machining requirements. Collaborate with team members to resolve machining issues and support continuous improvement in the shop. Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety guidelines while operating CNC equipment. Essential Skills 35 years of experience working as a CNC Machinist in a production or job shop environment. Proficiency in editing CNC programs using G&M code and/or conversational programming at the machine. Ability to read and interpret engineering prints and blueprints accurately. Strong capability to adjust feeds and speeds to achieve optimal machining results. Demonstrated ability to hold tolerances of +/- 0.005 inches on a consistent basis. Experience setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes. Comfort working with multiple setups per day and managing varying run times. Solid understanding of machining processes and basic quality control practices, including first article inspection. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience specifically operating Hurco CNC machines is a strong plus. Willingness to learn an additional programming method (G&M code or conversational) if currently proficient in only one. Familiarity with Brother CNC machines is beneficial. Previous experience in a small job shop environment is advantageous. Attention to detail and a strong commitment to producing high-quality work. Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with the team. Why Work Here? You will join a growing, forward-looking company that has recently secured new data center work, offering stability and exciting projects. The environment supports learning and skill development, especially in advanced CNC programming methods and diverse machine brands. With a close-knit team and a small-shop atmosphere, you can make a visible impact, enjoy strong collaboration, and experience a culture that values craftsmanship, reliability, and continuous improvement. Work Environment The role is based in a very small, close-knit shop of about 10 people, providing a collaborative and supportive atmosphere where your contributions are highly visible. The facility is pet-friendly, and the owner regularly brings dogs into the shop, creating a relaxed and personable environment. This is a first-shift position, typically running from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with work primarily scheduled during the week. You will work with CNC mills and lathes from brands such as Hurco and Brother, using both conversational and G&M code controls, in a setting focused on precision machining and efficient production.
