Lead Machine Builder
Job Description
Position Overview The Lead Machine Builder serves as a working lead responsible for the skilled fitting, assembly, installation, and troubleshooting of custom machinery while providing day-to-day direction and support to the Machine Builder team. This role assigns and coordinates work to meet production schedules, trains and mentors employees, supports the hiring and performance review processes, and partners with management and Human Resources on employee-related matters while maintaining a safe, efficient, and quality-focused work environment. Responsibilities Perform skilled fitting and assembly of machined and purchased components using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and machine operations. Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and other technical documentation. Custom fit components and assemblies while maintaining required tolerances and quality standards. Perform custom bending and installation of conduit and steel tubing. Lay out and complete installation of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and components. Install conduit and complete machine wiring as required. Apply mechanical knowledge, precision measurement, and inspection techniques throughout the machine build process. Assign, coordinate, and delegate daily work to team members to support production schedules and project priorities. Provide hands-on guidance, troubleshooting assistance, and technical support to Machine Builders. Train and mentor new employees on machine-building processes, safe work practices, crane and rigging procedures, and forklift operation. Participate in the interview and selection process for new team members. Provide leadership with feedback regarding employee performance, development, and employee relations matters. Review and approve time-off requests as needed while considering production and staffing requirements. Partner with Human Resources and management to address employee-related matters as appropriate. Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, power tools, and other equipment required for machine assembly. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment while complying with applicable quality, safety, work rules, and procedures. Support overtime and occasional weekend work based on production requirements. Qualifications Minimum of 4 years of machine building experience, preferably involving custom machinery or equipment. Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated knowledge of machine assembly and precision fitting techniques. Thorough knowledge of blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings. Strong shop math skills, including knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Previous experience leading a team, training employees, or serving in a mentorship role preferred. Ability to safely operate a forklift and overhead crane. Proficiency with power tools and ability to provide and maintain required personal hand tools. Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy and quality standards. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments in a production environment. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills. Team-oriented approach with the ability to work effectively with employees across different functions and experience levels. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and email. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Ability to work overtime and occasional weekends as business needs require.
