Position Summary
Hutco, Inc. is seeking experienced Outside Machinists to support shipyard operations at the Newport News Shipbuilding facility. Candidates must have at least 4 years of shipyard or naval experience as a First-Class Machinist. This role demands familiarity with shipboard mechanical systems, the ability to work from technical drawings, and a strongmitment to safety and quality.
Primary Responsibilities
Perform mechanical repairs, overhauls, and installations on shipboard equipment.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and technical manuals.
Work with various systems and equipment including:
Winches, anchor windlasses, steering gear
Airpressors, valves, and pumps
Diesel engines, gas turbines, reduction gears
Propulsion systems, shafts, propellers, rudders
Generators, steam turbines, hydraulic systems
Elevators, doors, weapons systems, deck equipment
Conduct valve overhauls (steam/WOG), lube oil flushing, hydrostatic testing, and optical alignment.
Perform shaft alignment and precision fitting using tools such as:
Micrometers, dial indicators, rulers, and calipers
Torque wrenches, grinders, boring bars, drill presses, portable mills
Adhere to all technical, quality, and safety standards per OSHA and shipyard regulations.
Required Qualifications
Experience:
4+ years as a First-Class Machinist in shipyard or naval settings.
Technical Proficiency:
Skilled in precision measuring instruments and alignment tools.
Familiarity with hull insert installations, fasteners, and shipbuilding nomenclature.
Must be capable of working from blueprints and performingplex mechanical work.
Physical Requirements:
Capable of lifting 50 lbs regularly and working in confined spaces.
Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
Tolerance for varied temperatures and humidity conditions.
