Job Description

Plant Manager D'Hanis Clay Products D'Hanis, Texas (Medina County, ~45 minutes west of San Antonio) Full-Time, On-Site About the Company D'Hanis Clay Products has made fired clay brick, tile, and architectural terra cotta in D'Hanis, Texas for more than 120 years. Our products are specified by architects and builders across Texas and beyond for their durability, color, and craftsmanship. Under new ownership, our mandate is to modernize how the plant runs without changing what makes the product worth buying. Position Summary The Plant Manager owns the plant: safety, production, maintenance, quality, crew, and shipping. This is a hands-on leadership role in a small, continuous-process plant — mining, grinding, forming, drying, firing, and finishing — where the manager is on the floor daily and builds the systems that do not exist yet. This is not mass production; the right leader pursues efficiency without sacrificing the handmade character our products are known for. Reports to the President and works closely with ownership. Key Responsibilities Safety. Own safe work practices, lockout/tagout, toolbox talks, housekeeping, incident reporting, and OSHA compliance. Safety is the first measure of this job. Maintenance. Develop and execute the preventive maintenance program; prioritize repairs, manage spare parts, and coordinate outside trades and vendors. Production. Plan and execute the weekly schedule against order commitments, review it with ownership, and deliver on or ahead of schedule. Manage raw material from the clay pit through grinding to the forming lines. Crew. Lead and develop an hourly workforce of 12-15, including crew leads. Own hiring, scheduling, attendance, performance, and terminations. Build a crew that stays. Quality, inventory, and shipping. Hold product standards from raw material through firing, grading, and packaging; manage finished goods, staging, loading, and shipping paperwork with the front office. Measurement and process. Report daily and weekly production, downtime, yield, scrap, and labor to the President; document procedures and lead continuous improvement in changeovers, material flow, and equipment reliability. Compliance. Support environmental and permit activities for the plant and clay pit. Who We Are Looking For Someone comfortable running a crew and comfortable developing and executing a maintenance program — who would rather own a whole plant early in their career than manage a slice of one at a large company. We hire for energy, effort, and attitude first: shows up early, works the problem on the floor, holds a standard, and wants to learn a craft. Time in a continuous-process plant (brick, cement, aggregates, quarry, foundry, lumber) is a strong plus. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Industrial Distribution, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, or related; equivalent trade and plant experience considered. 2-6 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment. Supervisory or lead experience over an hourly crew is a plus; demonstrated ability to lead people is required. Exposure to preventive maintenance and the drive to build a program from the ground up. Strong with crushers, conveyors, extruders, presses, motors, and burners.
Safety-minded:
OSHA basics, LOTO, incident reporting. Kiln or ceramics experience a plus. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. Proficient with spreadsheets and email. High energy, high ownership, coachable, and comfortable doing whatever the day requires. Work Environment Active plant with heat, dust, and noise; significant time outdoors in all seasons, including the clay pit. Must walk the facility throughout the day, climb stairs and ladders, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Pay:
$75,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
