Job Description

Position Summary The Non-Ferrous Scale Operator is responsible for accurately weighing, grading, and processing inbound and outbound loads of non-ferrous metals including copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, and other alloys at a metal recycling facility. This role serves as the first point of contact for customers and vendors bringing in scrap material, and plays a critical role in ensuring accurate pricing, safe material handling, and regulatory compliance. Key ResponsibilitiesScale Operations & Weighing Operate certified truck & floor scales to weigh inbound and outbound vehicles carrying non-ferrous scrap material. Accurately record gross, tare, and net weights for all transactions using scale house software. Ensure scales are calibrated and functioning correctly; report discrepancies to supervisor immediately. Issue scale tickets and maintain accurate documentation for all loads processed. Material Grading & Identification Visually inspect and identify non-ferrous metals including copper (bare bright, #1, #2), aluminum (clips, extrusion, cast), brass, zinc, lead, and stainless steel grades. Assign correct material grades and pricing codes per company standards and current market rates. Use XRF analyzers, grinders or other testing tools to verify metal composition when required. Flag and segregate contaminated, mixed, or questionable loads for supervisor review. Customer Service & Transactions Greet customers and vendors professionally; explain grading decisions and pricing clearly. Process cash and non-cash payment transactions accurately using the scale house point-of-sale system. Maintain compliance with all state and local scrap dealer regulations, including photo ID capture and transaction logging. Handle customer inquiries, disputes, and complaints in a calm, professional manner. Regulatory Compliance & Recordkeeping Ensure all transactions are logged in compliance with local scrap dealer laws (e.g., secondhand dealer regulations, seller ID requirements). Maintain accurate records of all purchases for regulatory reporting and internal audits. Report any suspicious activity or stolen materials to the supervisor and law enforcement as required. Assist with monthly inventory and quarterly reporting as requested. Safety & Housekeeping Adhere to all company safety policies, including proper PPE use (safety vest, steel-toed boots, gloves). Keep the scale house, surrounding area, and transaction lane clean and organized. Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic safely through the scale area. Participate in safety meetings, training, and drills. QualificationsRequired High school diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum 1 year of experience in a scrap yard, recycling facility, or related industrial environment. Ability to identify common non-ferrous metals by sight, color, weight, and magnetic properties. Basic computer proficiency; ability to learn scale house management software. Strong attention to detail and mathematical aptitude for weight and pricing calculations. Effective verbal communication skills for customer-facing interactions. Valid driver's license. Preferred 1-3 years of scale operator or cashier experience in a metal recycling environment. Familiarity with XRF analyzers Knowledge of current non-ferrous commodity pricing and market fluctuations. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Experience with scrap dealer compliance software (e.g., ScrapDragon, Scrap It, ScrapWare, GreenSpark). Physical Requirements Ability to stand or sit for extended periods in a scale house environment. Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs when handling sample materials. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain). Visual acuity sufficient to grade and sort metals and read scale displays. Ability to direct traffic and communicate in a high-noise environment.
