Position Summary:
The Mold Maker / Bench Hand is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, repair, and maintenance of molds, dies, and tooling used in multiple manufacturing processes. This role requires a high level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications. The individual will operate a variety of manual and CNC machining equipment to create and modify tooling components from drawings and by reverse engineering. This position will be focused on repairing and maintaining existing molds and building/improving assembly fixtures and components. Working closely with engineering and production teams, the Mold Maker ensures that tools function efficiently, meet quality standards, and support production timelines. The position also involves troubleshooting tooling issues, performing preventative maintenance, and recommending improvements to enhance tool performance and longevity. Success in this role depends on strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Build, fit, assemble, and troubleshoot molds, dies and fixtures from engineering drawings and CAD models Perform precision bench work including spotting, polishing, fitting components, and finishing details Diagnose mold issues and perform repairs, modifications, and preventive maintenance Operate manual toolroom equipment such as mills, hand grinders, lathes, welding equipment and surface grinders Proficiency in mold welding techniques including pre-heating and heat treating Work closely with engineers, machinists, and production teams to ensure molds meet specifications and function properly Attend mold tryouts and make necessary adjustments for optimal performance Maintain accurate documentation of work performed and tooling changes Ensure adherence to safety standards and quality requirements
Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in mold making and tooling bench work Strong understanding of mold components, cooling, gating, and ejection Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and CAD drawings Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators, etc.) Experience with mold spotting, fitting, welding, and hand finishing techniques Familiarity with CNC machining processes is a plus High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
Preferred Skills:
Experience with hot runner systems, multi-cavity molds, stamping dies, and compression molds Experience in holding, checking, and trimming fixtures Basic CAD/CAM knowledge and programming Troubleshooting skills in a production environment Self-starter, willing to be proactive to make repairs and maintain tooling and fixtures.
Work Environment:
Toolroom/manufacturing setting Standing for extended periods and handling heavy mold components Occasional overtime based on production demands Pay commensurate with experience.
