Job Summary The Wastewater Technician is responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of the wastewater treatment system at the assigned facility. This role supports safe, compliant, and efficient wastewater operations by executing established procedures, collecting samples, maintaining records, and responding to operational issues. This position plays a hands-on role in ensuring wastewater processes function as intended while promptly escalating abnormalities, alarms, or compliance concerns to supervisory leadership. This role performs wastewater treatment activities under established procedures and does not hold regulatory license authority. Key Responsibilities Operate wastewater treatment equipment and systems in accordance with established SOPs and permit requirements. Monitor gauges, meters, control panels, and process parameters. Adjust chemical feeds, flows, and basic controls as directed to maintain proper treatment performance. Respond to alarms, system upsets, or abnormal conditions; notify the Wastewater Supervisor as required. Collect wastewater samples in accordance with approved sampling protocols. Perform basic field testing (e.g., pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen) as required. Prepare samples for laboratory testing and ensure proper labeling, handling, and documentation. Record and report test results accurately and timely. Maintain daily logs, operating records, and inspection checklists. Document chemical usage, system adjustments, maintenance activities, and observations. Ensure records are complete, accurate, and available for review. Perform routine inspections, cleaning, and basic maintenance of wastewater equipment. Assist with troubleshooting and corrective actions as directed. Maintain housekeeping and organization of wastewater treatment areas. Safely handle, store, and use chemicals in accordance with training and safety guidelines. Supervisory Responsibilities None. This position has no direct reports. Qualifications Education/Experience High school diploma or GED preferred. Technical coursework or wastewater-related training preferred. Prior experience in wastewater treatment, utilities, or industrial operations preferred. Skills & Competencies Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment processes or willingness to learn. Ability to follow written procedures and operational instructions. Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial equipment. Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize abnormal conditions. Physical Requirements Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and twist throughout the shift. Walk on wet, uneven, slippery, or elevated surfaces, including stairs, platforms, catwalks, and outdoor work areas. Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier items with assistance or proper equipment. Climb ladders and stairs to inspect tanks, equipment, pumps, valves, screens, and treatment systems. Work in indoor and outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and varying weather conditions. Work around strong odors, wastewater, chemicals, moving equipment, and loud noise. Use hands and arms to operate tools, hoses, valves, pumps, meters, testing equipment, and controls. Wear required personal protective equipment, which may include safety glasses, gloves, chemical-resistant gear, rubber boots, hearing protection, face shield, respirator, or other PPE as required. Perform visual inspections, read gauges, meters, labels, and testing results accurately. Work in confined or restricted spaces only when properly trained and authorized. Tolerate exposure to poultry processing byproducts, wastewater treatment chemicals, and cleaning agents in accordance with safety procedures. Respond to equipment alarms, spills, leaks, or wastewater system issues as needed. Work Environment Work is performed in a poultry processing facility that operates year-round and may run multiple shifts, including weekends and holidays. Employees work in production areas that may include: Cold, refrigerated environments (Fresh Processing) Warm or hot areas near ovens, fryers, or cooking equipment (Prepared Foods) Wet and humid conditions with floors that may be wet or slippery Moderate to high noise levels requiring hearing protection Exposure to raw poultry and beef products and strong food-related odors Exposure to common food allergens used in production, including but not limited to wheat, soy, milk, sesame and egg. Exposure to moving machinery, conveyor systems, powered industrial equipment, and sharp tools.
