Description The Process Pipe Welder uses hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products, especially pipe and pipe fittings, according to fabrication drawings, especially structural steel, pipe spool, and pressure vessel assemblies. They must be able to set-up and operate various pieces of industrial equipment including, but not limited to, cranes, grinders, welding machines, power tools, and saws. With attention to detail hey must be able to measure accurately and produce work that meets precise design specifications. Responsibilities Operates welding equipment safely and uses appropriate PPE and safe work practices at all times.

Welds components in flat, vertical, and overhead positions using various manual or semi-automatic processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, and shielded metal arc welding.

Lays out, positions, aligns, clamps, tacks, and secures parts and assemblies using tools like straightedges, calipers, and combination squares to ensure proper fit and conformance to specifications.

Monitors welding operations to prevent overheating, warping, shrinkage, or distortion, and examines finished workpieces for defects.

Recognizes and uses standard hand and power tools common to the welding trade.

Identifies equipment malfunctions or material defects and notifies supervisors.

Assists in developing standard work procedures and documentation.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Competencies:

The Welder must have a solid understanding of welding machines and tools, including their design, use, maintenance, and repair. They should be familiar with design principles and skilled in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and technical plans. Strong communication skills are essential—listening carefully, asking questions when needed, and responding appropriately. The role also requires basic math skills for solving welding-related problems, the ability to choose the right tools and equipment for each task, and good time management for both individual work and coordinating with team members. Critical thinking and problem-solving are important, as is the ability to read and comprehend written work instructions.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent is desired.

Completion of a Welding Certification, apprenticeship program, or equivalent is required.

The ability to recognize when something is or might go wrong, and to take initiative in solving problems, is essential. The role requires strong focus and the ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods without distraction. Physical demands include regular use of arms, legs, and full-body movement—such as standing, walking, climbing, lifting, balancing, stooping, and handling materials.
