Position Summary:

The Emergency Communications Officer dispatches emergency personnel by radio and other communication equipment. The Communications Specialist is responsible for answering, coordinating, and disseminating critical calls for service utilizing specialized computer based telephone equipment. Provides information to patrol officers, detectives, records clerk, and other office personnel as needed to assist with the performance of their duties, Interacts with the public at the lobby window and by telephone, talking walk in reports and other Sheriff's Office business related activities.

Essential Functions:

▪ Ensures proper procedures are followed by monitoring radio communications and radio activities.

▪ Evaluates efficiency and effectiveness of dispatch.

▪ Communicates clearly over law enforcement radio.

▪ Receives and coordinates police, fire, ambulance and other emergency requests and determines nature and seriousness of call(s) and dispatches patrol cars and emergency vehicles as necessary.

▪ Maintains a daily radio log for all incoming calls according to type on CAD system. Starts the incident program by typing a variety of reports for specific types of crimes and complaints (e.g., accident reports, missing persons, theft, runaways, dog, etc.)

▪ Relays information to the concerned agency by conducting searches through department files and National Crime Information Center.

▪ Enters warrants into various computers.

▪ Monitors a variety of alarm systems..

▪ Collects money for concealed weapons permits, Sex Offender Registration, money or bonds to bail subjects from jail and civil fees

▪ Performs essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation efficiently and accurately without posing a direct safety or health threat to others or self.

▪ Performs public relations by effectively communicating with people, giving information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes.

▪ Testifies in court

▪ Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.

▪ Works with other agencies, relaying information to them as directed by the watch commander or other Sheriff's Office personnel.

▪ Manages callers; calms and control callers, communicates with special needs callers, and communicates with callers from diverse backgrounds using on call linguists.

Requirements:

Ability to obtain NCIC level I and II operator certifications within one (1) year. Ability to obtain an Emergency Medical Dispatch certification within one (1) year from date of hire and maintains certification through continuing education. Ability to think clearly, take control, and remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations. Typing skills at 45 words per minute Experience in customer service Performs multiple tasks simultaneously. Sitting with intermittent moving in an office environment, reaching, lifting of office supplies (e.g., binders, copier paper etc.), talking & hearing (in person and by telephone), memorizing, and seeing (e.g., documents, etc.) Manual dexterity to perform office functions (e.g., typing, filing, collating, operating office machines Crouching, stooping, standing and walking. Ability to work a variety of shifts and days off including weekends and holidays Life threatening conditions are possible Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must be 18 years of age. Must possess valid drivers' license. A minimum of 24 months work experience, education or military experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
