Job Description

Marketing & Advertising Internship - Department of Community & Economic Development This internship is funded by the East Lansing Downtown Management Board (DMB). The DMB promotes East Lansing's downtown through a variety of marketing and creative placemaking efforts designed to encourage people to shop, dine, live, and invest in downtown East Lansing. This internship will provide experience to an individual in the areas of digital marketing, advertising, communications, event planning, placemaking, and economic development. This position will work under the direction of Community and Economic Development Department staff to assist the DMB in developing and implementing strategies to market, advertise, and promote the downtown East Lansing area and its businesses. Responsibilities will range from social media management, marketing and branding campaign development, community engagement activities, and event management. Job duties include, but are not limited to: Create digital, online content for websites and social media. Assist with implementing image and branding campaigns. Engage with community members, visitors, and businesses within the downtown East Lansing area. Facilitate and manage events. Assist with brainstorming placemaking programming and activities. The hours will vary weekly and average approximately 12 hours per week September - April. You may also be required to periodically work other evening and weekend hours to support other Downtown Management Board special events, including, but not limited to:
Great Pumpkin Walk:
Sunday, October 25th
Downtown EL Tree Lighting:
Saturday, November 21st
Union Affiliation:
Non-union Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Preference for those pursuing a Bachelors or advanced degree in a related discipline. Must have: knowledge of social media marketing, strong problem-solving skills, ability to speak to the public, and a willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
Preferred:
experience in photography, videography, photo/video editing, and or graphic design. Special Requirements To perform the essential functions of the job, an individual may be required to stay in one period for prolonged periods of time as well as travel between sites within the City, work in both indoor and outdoor environments, handle moderately heavy (25 - 40 pounds) bags/boxes/equipment, operate assigned office equipment including computers, operate a City vehicle, and communicate effectively with both City employees and the public.
