Job Description

Work under the supervision of the Pathologist(s) and Histology Department Lead to perform daily operations, and reports to the Director-Laboratory. A Pathology assistant (PA) is a highly trained, certified allied health professional who is qualified by academic and practical training to provide services in anatomic pathology under the supervision of a licensed, board-certified anatomic pathologist. PAs perform various tasks, including gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, and preparing tissue for testing. PAs play a crucial role in providing accurate and timely processing of pathological specimens, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory. Peform complete dissection, gross description, selection and submission of tissue for microscopic examiniation and special studies such as flow cytometry and/or immunohistochemical staining. Interacts with the pathologists and carrying out their duties under the direction of the Pathologist. Maintaining high ethical standards and integirty in performance of their assigned duties. Photograph gross and microscopic specimens, help prepare educational conferences and provide training to pathology personnel, including pathology residents and medical students. Works as liaison to other departments and laboratories to ensure quality healthcare. Maintains pathology protocols, procedures, reports and data. Adheres to the Laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, quality control practices and proper maintenance of equipment. Idtenfies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and works to correct or reort the problem. Ensures a professional enviornment is maintained. Assists in the preparation for accreditation inspections (CAP, Joint Commission) Other duties as assigned Education Associate's Degree
  • Biological, Chemical or a related Laboratory science, including medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution.
Education includes at least 60 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Required Bachelor's Degree
  • 4-Year Bachelor of Science degree (i.e. chemistry, biology, biochemistry, medical laboratory science) having the required science hours required by CLIA to perform high complexity testing
  • Required Work Experience 1 Year
  • Related experience to inlcude grossing small biopsies and complex surgical cases
  • Preferred 1 Year
  • Experience cutting frozen sections
  • Preferred Licenses and Certifications Pathologists' Assistant (PA)
  • Preferred Upon Hire Or Meeting Grandfathered certification requirements prior to 2010 by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC)
  • Preferred Upon Hire Travel Requirements Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed.
