Job Description
Position Summary The Church Organist serves as a vital member of the Music Ministry, providing musical leadership that enhances worship and supports the mission of the church. The Organist is responsible for providing organ music for worship services and special events, accompanying the choir and congregation, and working collaboratively under the direction of the Minister of Music to create meaningful worship experiences. The Organist is expected to demonstrate Christian character, professionalism, and a commitment to the spiritual life of the church. Duties and Responsibilities The Church Organist shall: Demonstrate a deep and growing Christian faith and serve as a positive representative of the church's mission, values, and ministry. Support the vision and direction of the Music Ministry under the leadership of the Minister of Music. Play the organ for all scheduled worship services, including Sunday services, midweek services, revivals, weddings, funerals, special programs, and other church events as assigned. Prepare and practice all music in advance to ensure excellence in performance. Accompany the church choir, praise team, soloists, guest musicians, and congregational singing during worship services and special events. Attend all scheduled choir rehearsals, music rehearsals, and planning meetings as required by the Minister of Music. Follow the musical direction, leadership, and guidance of the Minister of Music in all aspects of worship planning and musical presentation. Select appropriate organ music and service music in consultation with the Minister of Music and church leadership. Maintain effective communication and foster positive working relationships with the Minister of Music, clergy, choir members, musicians, staff, and volunteers. Work cooperatively and respectfully with all members of the Music Ministry to promote unity, professionalism, and excellence. Encourage and support congregational participation in worship through appropriate musical accompaniment. Assist in maintaining the church organ by reporting maintenance needs, arranging for routine tuning, and coordinating professional repairs when authorized. Maintain a repertoire of sacred music appropriate to the church's worship style, liturgical calendar, and special occasions. Arrive on time and be fully prepared for rehearsals, worship services, and special events. Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all areas of ministry. Comply with all church policies, procedures, and applicable safeguarding requirements while respecting the sacred nature of the worship environment. Perform other duties as assigned by the Pastor, Executive Pastor, or Minister of Music that support the mission and ministry of the church. Qualifications A demonstrated personal commitment to the Christian faith and a lifestyle consistent with the church's mission and values. Proficiency in playing the organ, with the ability to accompany choirs, soloists, and congregational singing. Ability to read music and perform a broad range of sacred music styles. Experience serving as a church organist is preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the Music Ministry team. Willingness to accept direction and work under the supervision of the Minister of Music. Dependable, organized, punctual, and well-prepared for all rehearsals and worship services. Ability to maintain a respectful, cooperative, and servant-hearted attitude when working with church leadership, musicians, choir members, and the congregation. Salary Commensurate with experience, education, and demonstrated musical proficiency.
