Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports a high-volume clinical or laboratory setting by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and handling specimens according to strict protocols, and maintaining accurate patient and laboratory records. This role also assists with troubleshooting workflow issues, training others on proper techniques, and recommending improvements to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. Responsibilities + Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. + Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols. + Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accuracy and completeness of all orders. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. + Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. + Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity during handling and shipment. + Store specimens at the appropriate temperature and in the correct collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling and adherence to protocol. + Follow detailed procedures specific to each protocol to preserve specimen quality and integrity from collection through transport. + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements. + Record maintenance and decontamination data accurately and in a timely manner as part of routine laboratory operations. + Update patient information and documentation in the appropriate systems to maintain accurate and current records. + Answer telephone calls and respond to inquiries by reading and communicating laboratory results as appropriate. + Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and recommend improvements where needed. + Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques to colleagues when required. Essential Skills + Demonstrated experience performing venipunctures and blood draws, including the use of straight needles and butterfly needles. + Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. + Proficiency in collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to established procedures. + Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts. + Strong understanding of specimen handling requirements, including temperature control, appropriate containers, and protocol-specific procedures. + Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety standards. + Ability to clearly explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and reporting tasks. + High School Diploma or
GED . + 2-4
years of overall work experience, including relevant phlebotomy and laboratory responsibilities. + Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Strong customer service skills with a patient-focused approach to care and communication. + Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment with multiple priorities and time-sensitive tasks. + Comfort with answering phone calls and communicating laboratory results or information to appropriate parties. + Attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and verification of orders. + Ability to assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and recommending process improvements. + Willingness to support training and demonstrate proper techniques to colleagues as needed. Work Environment This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where phlebotomy and specimen processing are performed regularly throughout the day. The role involves frequent patient interaction for blood draws and other specimen collections, as well as close collaboration with laboratory and clinical staff. You will work with standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units, and use computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information and manage documentation. The environment follows strict safety, OSHA , and DEP guidelines, including proper handling, storage, and transport of specimens.
