Job Description
Company Overview Foss Recycling Inc. is the largest recycler in North Carolina and one of the fastest-growing recycling companies on the East Coast, with nearly 30 locations across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. We specialize in metal recycling, container services, transportation, brokerage, and sustainable waste solutions, committed to excellence, integrity, and teamwork in the industry. Job Summary The Port Dispatcher plays a critical role in coordinating the export shipping process for recycled materials at Foss Recycling. This position manages the full lifecycle of port loads—from booking containers and dispatching drivers/haulers to handling documentation, invoicing, and compliance—ensuring timely, efficient, and accurate overseas shipments. The role requires strong multitasking in a fast-paced environment with frequent communication via email, phone, and specialized systems. Hours can be irregular, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends to align with port schedules, cut-offs, and vessel movements. Responsibilities Input payroll for port drivers and approve/submit invoices for contract haulers and chassis providers.
Material sales trigger the process:
Request bookings via Sealink and coordinate with buyers/freight forwarders for cut-off deadlines. Add confirmed bookings to spreadsheets orCIETRADE
(for brokered loads). Develop and communicate shipping plans with originating yards. Dispatch drivers to pull empty containers from the port, load at yards, and schedule return appointments. Collect loading documentation/photos from yards and submit draft BLs. Forward approved draft BLs to buyers post-invoicing; monitor until containers ship, closing out the dispatcher's responsibilities unless adjustments are needed. Dispatch loads by scheduling pick-ups, returns, and container movements for company drivers and third-party contract haulers. Request and secure bookings for all Foss yards and brokered loads through systems like Sealink; input brokered bookings into CIETRADE and distribute to third-party haulers. Submit draft Bills of Lading (BLs) for overseas loads and manage follow-up approvals with buyers after invoicing. Communicate proactively with yards, buyers, freight forwarders, drivers, and other stakeholders to develop shipping plans, confirm cut-offs, and resolve issues. Update and maintain port load spreadsheets, Nucor calendar, and other tracking tools for accurate status reporting. Ensure drivers maintain valid permits and coordinate truck maintenance/services through the shop team. Receive and process loading photos, documents, and other paperwork to support export compliance and completion of loads. Monitor container movements ("hitting the water") and handle any post-departure requests for paperwork changes or adjustments. Manage high volumes of email and phone correspondence with diverse stakeholders, including drivers, haulers, ports, and buyers. Skills Proven experience in logistics dispatching, transportation coordination, port/export operations, or related field (recycling, shipping, or freight brokerage preferred). Strong multitasking and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable handling frequent phone/email interactions and managing multiple personalities/stakeholders (drivers, haulers, buyers). Solid problem-solving abilities and stress management under pressure. High work ethic, reliability, and drive—self-motivated with a team-player mindset (lazy or easily overwhelmed individuals will not thrive). Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google Suite and willingness to learn industry-specific software (prior experience with dispatching/logistics systems is a plus). Availability for irregular hours, including early starts, evenings, or occasional weekends to accommodate port/vessel schedules.Pay:
