We perform fabrication for commercial/structural projects and heavy fabrication for Departments of Transportation and the US Army Corps of Engineers. You may have seen our projects or driven across a bridge with components that we fabricated. We are seeking an experienced Lead Steel Detailer to serve as a hands-on production detailer while taking a lead role in developing and managing our detailing operations. In this dual-capacity role, you will produce high-quality shop drawings for complex structural and heavy industrial and governmental projects while helping establish department standards, oversee quality control, and drive software/process improvements as we continue to grow. Key Responsibilities Production Detailing & Checking (60-70%)
- Model and produce accurate, buildable shop and erection drawings and generate NC1 and STEP files using 3D/2D CAD software (AutoCAD, Advance Steel, GRAITEC PowerPack) in accordance with AISC standards and project specs.
- Perform rigorous checking and Quality Control (QC) on internally produced and outsourced detailing packages.
- Review architectural/engineering drawings, submit RFIs to clarify missing design information, and coordinate connection detailing with project engineers.
- Identify scope changes, generate change order requests, and track scope updates.
- Perform material quantity take-offs and/or MRP data entry to support estimating and raw material procurement when needed. Department Leadership & Operations (30-40%)
- Lead daily operations for the detailing department, establishing workflow standards, layer naming conventions, and quality management protocols aligned with our AISC certification.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external detailing firms, managing schedules, reviewing deliverables, and maintaining quality control.
- Evaluate and help drive future detailing technology upgrades (e.g., transition or expansion into advanced 3D BIM tools like SDS2).
- Collaborate with Project Management, Estimating, and Shop Supervision to resolve fabrication issues early through proactive root-cause analysis.
- Mentor junior detailers or CAD technicians as the team expands.
