Sanitation Driver Job Description
DEFINITION
To operate solid waste collection equipment; to assume responsibility for timely collection of solid waste on the assigned route; to lead and oversee assigned staff; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility and other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Utilities Authority Director, Deputy UA Director and upper management.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions :
1. Operate assigned solid waste collection equipment/truck; ensure timely refuse collection on the assigned route. 2. Lead and oversee lower-level staff assigned to truck; ensure adherence to standard safety precautions. 3. Maintain a daily log of activities; document polycarts not received; review with billing supervisor & supervisors. 4. Conduct daily inspections on vehicles; check water, oil, fuel, and other fluid levels; grease trucks, as necessary; clean sanitation equipment. 5. Review safety requirements with lower-level staff; respond to safety questions. 6. Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to get along well with people. 7. Perform work activities according to safe work practices and procedures. 8. Work and days and hours as assigned by management. 9. Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Operation of solid waste collection equipment. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Town streets layout. Pertinent Federal, State, or Local laws, regulations, or ordinances. Sanitation Driver (Continued) Ability to: Use and operate solid waste collection equipment. Perform minor maintenance activities on solid waste heavy equipment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: 1. Walking, standing, lifting or sitting for extended periods of time 2. Operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: 1. Making observations 2. Communicating with others 3. Reading and writing 4. Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions :
Travel from site to site; field environment; exposure to noise, dust, smoke, fumes, gases, infectious materials, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy sanitation equipment.
Physical Conditions :
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles. License or Certificate Possession of an appropriate, valid Class B commercial driver's license as required.
