Through the Services to Older Refugees Program, RICS is creating a welcoming bridge between refugee elders and the health, aging, food, transportation, and community resources available to them. Cross-Cultural Navigators are at the heart of this work. They bring language, cultural understanding, trust, and connection directly into the lives of older adults in our community. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference for refugee elders while helping build a stronger, more connected Spokane. Position Summary The Cross-Cultural Navigator (CCN) builds relationships with Swahili/Kinyarwanda-speaking refugee elders and helps them connect with RICS programs, community resources, and essential services. The ideal candidate is warm, dependable, community-minded, and comfortable working with older adults. Fluency in Swahili is required; Kinyarwanda is strongly preferred. Key Responsibilities Build relationships with Swahili/Kinyarwanda-speaking refugee elders and conduct community outreach. Help eligible participants complete enrollment, eligibility, and program paperwork. Assist with basic needs assessments and communicate participant needs to the RICS social worker. Provide interpretation, cultural support, and assistance communicating with service providers. Help participants connect with health care, aging services, transportation, food, and other community resources. Provide or coordinate transportation to program activities and approved health-related destinations. Support daytime programming and weekly fresh-food deliveries for participating elders. Maintain timely documentation of participant contacts, services, referrals, and activities. Participate in team meetings, training, and other activities that support the success of the program. Knowledge & Skills Fluent in Swahili. Kinyarwanda proficiency preferred. Able to communicate effectively in English with RICS staff and community partners. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Respectful and sensitive to cultural, linguistic, religious, and generational differences. Reliable, organized, and comfortable working independently. Able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive participant information. Comfortable using basic computer systems; training will be provided. Previous experience with refugees, immigrants, older adults, community outreach, interpretation, or social services is preferred. Education & Experience Previous experience working in a multicultural environment or with refugee and immigrant communities is preferred. Experience working with older adults or navigating health and social service systems is a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift up to 40 lbs., and perform routine physical activities associated with transportation, food delivery, and program activities. Other Requirements Must be able to pass a background check. Must maintain participant confidentiality and comply with RICS policies. Must have an acceptable driving record Must hold a valid Washington State Driver's license While using a personal vehicle is not required for the position, having a vehicle with current insurance coverage is required Driving Requirements For positions involving participant transportation or operation of a 12-passenger van, employees must be age 21 or older, hold a valid Washington State driver's license, maintain an acceptable driving record, and comply with RICS vehicle safety policies. Terms of Employment Work hours must be recorded daily in BambooHR. This position is non-exempt and subject to overtime requirements under Washington State law. RICS retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
