Plana is a women-led, faith-informed non-profit dedicated to ensuring no woman faces an unplanned pregnancy alone. Approximately 3 million women face an unplanned pregnancy each year with no real support system in place, leaving them isolated at the exact moment they most need guidance, resources, and care. Through our pregnancy concierge app, we pair every woman with a real Care Coordinator who reaches out within 20 minutes, offer licensed counseling on all pregnancy options with zero pressure, and coordinate a full network of housing, financial, medical, and adoption resources into one personalized care plan. Our mission is to give every woman, regardless of her situation or income, access to real, comprehensive support: physical, emotional, and practical. Join our dynamic team and be part of a cause that makes a real difference!
Hybrid Work Model:
This position will require a minimum of 3 days per week in our office, currently located in Henderson, NV.
Job Summary:
As the Lead Product Engineer, you will own the design, development, and security of the Plana app end to end: the mobile experience, the backend, and the internal admin dashboard. This is a hands-on, senior role: most of the time you are building. You will use Claude and Claude Code as your primary tools for rapid design and development, head up all internal design and feature work, and be the single person accountable for turning our ideas into shipped, secure, reliable software. When the workload exceeds what you and Claude Code can deliver, you will scope, help hire, and manage an external (likely offshore) development team while holding the quality and security bar. You are the technical center of gravity for the product. As a startup, we are all working together to serve women to the best of our ability, which often involves crossing into areas that aren't native to our expertise, but we all pull together to achieve our mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Design & Development Design, build, ship, and maintain the Plana mobile app (iOS and Android), the backend/APIs, and the internal admin dashboard. Translate product and feature requests into working designs and shipped code. Use Claude and Claude Code as primary tools for rapid design and development. Own the release process, testing, monitoring, and the fixing of production bugs and issues. Design Leadership Head up all internal design and feature work: UX flows, interface design, and prototypes. Ensure a calm, accessible, and trustworthy experience appropriate for emotionally sensitive users. Data Security & Compliance Own data security, privacy, and compliance for a nationwide health app handling highly sensitive personal information. Implement authentication, access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, secrets management, and secure data modeling. Maintain readiness for HIPAA and related requirements and lead incident response. Architecture & Scale Design the backend, data model, and infrastructure to be reliable and scalable to a nationwide user base. Make sound build-vs-buy, tooling, and vendor decisions. Team & Vendor Management When needed, scope, help hire, onboard, and manage an external/offshore development team. Review external work and hold quality and security standards high. Reporting Report development progress, risks, and security posture to leadership regularly.
Qualifications:
Passion for women's wellness and alignment with Plana's mission and values. 5+ years building and shipping production consumer software, with real ownership.
Full-stack capability:
a modern mobile stack (React Native, Flutter, Swift, or Kotlin) plus backend (Node, Python, or Go) and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure). At least one product shipped end to end that you can point to in an app store or in production. Fluent using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) as a serious part of your workflow, without shipping AI output unreviewed.
Solid application security fundamentals:
authentication, authorization, encryption, secrets management, and safe handling of personal/health data. A designer's eye and a strong sense for clean, thoughtful, accessible product UX. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage multiple workstreams with limited supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience shipping a HIPAA-compliant, health, or other regulated (e.g., fintech) app. Experience scoping and managing external or offshore development teams. Startup or founding-engineer experience operating with ambiguity and limited resources. Experience in a non-profit or faith-based organization.
