Job Description
Data Systems Manager Our client is seeking an experienced Data Systems Manager to take ownership of the technology, data, and reporting systems that support a specialized, data-driven organization. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys working across databases, business applications, reporting, infrastructure, and modernization initiatives while remaining close to the day-to-day technology environment. The ideal candidate is a versatile problem solver who can understand and reverse engineer legacy systems, maintain highly accurate data operations, lead a small team, and thoughtfully guide the organization toward more modern technology solutions. This role is on-site in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Data Systems Manager Responsibilities Lead the administration, support, and ongoing improvement of business-critical data systems, databases, applications, and recurring reporting processes. Manage Microsoft SQL Server environments, including database structures, SQL queries, data validation, integrations, imports/exports, and reporting workflows. Support, troubleshoot, and reverse engineer legacy Microsoft-based applications and integrations while developing practical strategies for modernization, replacement, and cloud migration. Oversee recurring statistical and analytical reporting, ensuring data is accurate, complete, secure, and delivered according to established schedules. Manage a key external data and reporting contract, including renewals, required deliverables, periodic proposal responses, performance requirements, and ongoing stakeholder communication. Supervise two team members supporting reporting, publications, and related data deliverables, providing direction, prioritization, and quality oversight. Develop, maintain, and enhance reporting solutions using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and related Microsoft technologies. Support internal business applications, including .NET-based systems, and participate in application enhancements, testing, deployment, documentation, and ongoing user support. Evaluate and improve existing data collection and transfer processes, including legacy workflows supporting information received from remote field personnel. Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve data reliability using integration, scripting, workflow, and low-code technologies. Manage outsourced IT providers and technology vendors while supporting network, server, security, access, and business continuity needs. Develop forward-looking plans for infrastructure, cloud architecture, application modernization, and the responsible use of AI and automation technologies. Support the organization's public website, including content management, maintenance, upgrades, and coordination of technical changes. Partner with internal teams to understand business requirements, fulfill specialized data requests, and translate technical issues and recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. Maintain strong controls around confidential business, customer, operational, and market data. Data Systems Manager Qualifications 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in information technology, data systems, business applications, database administration, or a related discipline. Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including SQL querying, database administration concepts, data structures, data quality, and reporting. Demonstrated ability to understand, troubleshoot, and reverse engineer legacy applications, databases, workflows, and integrations, including systems with limited documentation. Experience supporting Microsoft-based business applications, including applications built on the .NET platform. Experience developing and maintaining reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or comparable enterprise reporting tools. Proven experience supporting structured data environments involving recurring reporting, statistical analysis, publications, or other deadline-driven data deliverables. Experience with data integration, import/export processes, validation, automation, and process improvement. Experience supervising staff and coordinating work across technical, administrative, vendor, and business stakeholders. Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, recurring deadlines, vendor relationships, technology contracts, and outsourced IT services. Working knowledge of Windows environments, Microsoft Office, and advanced data and reporting workflows involving Excel. Experience with workflow automation or low-code platforms such as Nintex K2 or similar technologies. Working knowledge of infrastructure and security fundamentals, including networking, servers, cloud environments, access management, cybersecurity, and business continuity. Experience supporting websites through a content management system; Umbraco experience is a plus. Experience with cloud migration, hybrid environments, application modernization, or AI-enabled business solutions is preferred. Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business Information Systems, or a related discipline is preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, project management, documentation, and communication skills with the ability to independently own complex technical and operational responsibilities. A collaborative, service-oriented approach and demonstrated professional stability, with an interest in building deep organizational knowledge and contributing in a long-term capacity.
