Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit Founded in 1924, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science provides training, consultation, and research support services to faculty, staff, and students across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and beyond. Odum expands Carolina's impact by providing education and support for planning, implementing, and disseminating research. We work to advance rigorous and reproducible research across the data, social and health sciences, while building collaborative, trans-disciplinary research networks. Positioned in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Institute is funded through state/university appropriations and grants/contracts led by Institute staff. Position Summary We are seeking a consultant to join our statistics consultant team. Statistics helpdesk consultants support the UNC-Chapel Hill research community by providing guidance on quantitative data analysis, statistical programming, data cleaning, data management, and data visualization. They assist researchers using software such as Mplus, Python, R, SAS, SPSS, and/or Stata. The Statistics Helpdesk Consultant will collaborate with Odum Institute statisticians, data scientists and survey consultants and other research professionals to deliver consultation services and contribute to survey and research support projects as needed. In addition, this position provides support for data management and visualization needs related to Qualtrics, the university's web-based survey platform. Helpdesk shifts are typically four hours in length during business hours between 9am - 6pm on-site at the Odum Institute located on Franklin St in Chapel Hill, NC. This is a temporary position with projected duration through July 1, 2027.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide client-focused one-on-one statistical consulting both in-person and virtually to faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.
- Assist researchers with quantitative analysis, statistical programming, data cleaning, data management and data visualization.
- Support users of statistical software including Mplus, Python, R, SAS, SPSS and Stata.
- Advise researchers on data management and visualization practices within Qualtrics.
- Collaborate with Odum Institute staff to address complex research questions and support survey-related projects.
- Contribute to other research support activities as assigned. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Management Preferences
- Demonstrated experience in teaching or consultation.
- Proficiency in R, SAS, Mplus, and/or Stata.
- Working knowledge of at least one additional statistical software package.
- Working knowledge in Qualtrics programming or data analysis features.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
