As assigned; typically aligned with student transportation routes (AM/PM) Position Summary The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and courteous transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities. The driver ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local transportation requirements, including Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Applicants who do not currently possess the required CDL and endorsements are encouraged to apply. MSD of Shakamak will provide required training and cover approved costs associated with obtaining the necessary license and endorsements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safely operate a school bus and related district vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, transportation regulations, district policies, and established safety procedures. Complete required pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is safe and ready for operation. Promptly report mechanical problems, damage, accidents, or safety concerns to the Director of Maintenance & Transportation. Follow assigned routes and schedules and make adjustments when directed by the district. Provide safe and appropriate supervision of students while they are being transported. Maintain appropriate student conduct using calm, respectful communication consistent with district expectations. Assist students with boarding, seating, securement, and exiting the bus when needed. Ensure that students and equipment are properly secured when applicable. Complete required post-trip checks to ensure no student remains on the bus. Maintain accurate and timely records, including mileage, student counts, inspection documentation, and incident reports. Communicate professionally with students, parents, staff members, administrators, and members of the public regarding transportation matters. Participate in required safety drills, professional development, certification programs, and annual training. Assist with bus evacuation drills and other emergency-preparedness procedures. Provide transportation for field trips, extracurricular activities, athletic events, and emergency situations as assigned. Comply with all applicable physical examination, drug and alcohol testing, and driver-certification requirements. Protect student confidentiality and handle student information in accordance with district policy and applicable law. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance & Transportation. Qualifications Must hold or be willing and able to obtain, at minimum, a valid Indiana Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements . A valid Class A CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements is also acceptable. An Air Brake endorsement is optional and is not required for this position. MSD of Shakamak may provide required training and cover approved costs associated with obtaining the necessary CDL and endorsements. Must meet all applicable IDOE, FMCSA, and DOT licensing, physical examination, certification, and drug and alcohol testing requirements. Must be at least 21 years of age. High school diploma or GED required. Must maintain an acceptable driving record and meet district insurability requirements. Must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, sound judgment, and the ability to respond appropriately under pressure. Must be able to work effectively with students of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, route sheets, schedules, and safety protocols. Must successfully complete required background checks and other employment screenings. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Work is performed primarily in a school bus and is subject to changing weather, traffic, road conditions, noise, and student interactions. A split-shift schedule consisting of morning and afternoon routes is common. Additional hours may be available for field trips, extracurricular activities, and athletic events. Must be able to sit and operate a school bus for extended periods. Must be able to enter and exit the bus, conduct inspections, and respond appropriately during emergencies. Must be able to assist students and lift, move, or secure equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Evaluation Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Maintenance & Transportation in accordance with board policy and established evaluation procedures.
