DESCRIPTION FOR 7D DRIVER
Job Title:
7D School Transportation Driver Reports to: Transportation Director
Job Summary:
The 7D School Transportation Driver is responsible for the safe and reliable transportation of students in accordance with Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) 7D (School Pupil Transport) license requirements. This position involves operating a school transport vehicle (van or small school vehicle), following established routes and schedules, and ensuring the well-being of students throughout their commute.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Safely operate a school transport vehicle to pick up and drop off students according to assigned routes and schedules.
  • Assist students during boarding and exiting the vehicle, ensuring proper seating and use of seat belts.
  • Maintain a calm, supportive environment while transporting students, including those with special needs if applicable.
  • Follow all Massachusetts RMV 7D licensing rules, school department policies, and state and federal transportation laws.
  • Perform required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle; report any mechanical issues immediately.
  • Maintain order and adhere to student behavior expectations during transport.
  • Ensure the vehicle remains clean, safe, and properly maintained.
  • Communicate professionally with students, parents/guardians, school staff, and administrators.
  • Report incidents, delays, or concerns promptly to the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA.
Qualifications:
  • Valid Massachusetts 7D School Pupil Transport License (or eligibility to obtain).
  • Acceptable driving record and successful completion of required background checks (CORI, SORI, DCF, fingerprinting).
  • Ability to pass a random drug test.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical exam, if required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with students of various ages and needs.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and exercise good judgment.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and strong attention to safety.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating the vehicle.
  • Capability to perform vehicle inspections (bending, walking, reaching).
  • Ability to assist students entering/exiting the vehicle safely.
  • Work may involve morning, midday, and afternoon shifts depending on school schedules.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions and frequent transitions in and out of the vehicle.
  • Position may require lifting or assisting students as needed.
Compensation:
This position is 180 days following the academic school year calendar. The pay for this position is $25.32 per hour, in accordance with the current agreement between the Quincy Public School Committee and Teamsters Local 122 Union. This position is benefits-eligible, including sick leave, personal days, health and dental insurance, and select paid holidays.
