Job Title:
Animal Care Technician Job Description This Animal Care Technician role focuses on providing high-quality daily care to research animals while maintaining clean, safe, and compliant animal facilities. You will perform routine husbandry, sanitation, and recordkeeping tasks that support experimental research, working closely with a collaborative team in a structured laboratory environment. This position offers strong opportunities for professional growth within a large, expanding organization that values internal development and promotes Animal Care Technicians into roles such as Research Associate. Responsibilities Perform daily care of research animals used for experimental purposes, including routine observations to assess animal health and overall environment. Monitor animals and their housing conditions, promptly report any changes in animal behavior, health status, or environmental conditions to appropriate personnel. Change and clean animal cages, racks, equipment, water bottles, and food containers according to established procedures and schedules. Unpack and house animals upon arrival, ensuring proper identification, placement, and acclimation to the facility. Perform animal husbandry and maintenance duties in assigned areas, including cage wash, barrier rooms, and loading dock operations as needed. Conduct monthly sanitation of equipment and facilities to maintain a clean, safe, and compliant research environment. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of animals, supplies, and equipment, ensuring traceability and compliance with internal standards and procedures. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory safety guidelines at all times to protect animals, staff, and research integrity. Collaborate with a team of 10-12 colleagues on shift-based operations, supporting overall workflow and assisting team members as needed. Demonstrate flexibility to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, as this is an essential personnel position responsible for continuous animal care. Support operations across multiple vivarium areas, including cage wash, barrier rooms, and loading dock, depending on assignment and facility needs. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent technical certificate. A minimum of one year of experience in animal care is preferred. Hands-on experience working with mice in a research or animal care setting. Demonstrated skills in animal husbandry, including feeding, watering, and monitoring animals. Ability to perform thorough cleaning and sterilization of cages, equipment, and facility spaces. Capability to follow basic standard operating procedures (SOPs) accurately and consistently. Strong attention to detail in observing animal health status and environmental conditions. Ability to maintain accurate records of animals, supplies, and equipment. Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively with 10-12 colleagues on a shift. Willingness and availability to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, as essential personnel. Additional Skills & Qualifications Familiarity with laboratory safety practices and procedures. Experience working in vivarium environments, including cage wash, barrier rooms, or loading docks. Interest in career growth within research environments, with potential to advance into roles such as Research Associate. Comfort working in a structured, process-driven environment with clear SOPs and compliance expectations. Work Environment The role is based within multiple vivariums on a large research campus, with each vivarium operating as its own team environment. You will typically work on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, on an 8-hour shift that can start as early as 5:00 a.m. You will collaborate closely with a team of approximately 10-12 colleagues on each shift. This position is designated as essential personnel, so weekend and holiday work is required to ensure continuous animal care, and you must be flexible to work overtime when needed. The work involves assignments in specific operational areas such as cage wash, barrier rooms, and loading dock, each with specialized equipment and procedures. The campus features amenities such as an onsite gym and cafeteria, and there are plans for a fully staffed daycare within five years. The broader organization is in expansion mode, with significant growth planned over the next several years, creating a dynamic environment with strong opportunities for advancement.
