This is not an entry-level or trainee position. We are looking for a technician with a minimum of 3-5 years of professional drain and sewer cleaning experience who is comfortable diagnosing and resolving drain problems independently. You do not need to be a licensed plumber to qualify. Extensive professional drain-cleaning experience is what we're looking for. About the Position At MP Plumbing, doing the job correctly and taking care of the customer matters more than making a sale. We want technicians who take pride in their work, communicate well, and want to be part of a professional service team. Our Drain & Sewer Cleaning Technician is responsible for responding to scheduled and dispatched service calls throughout the Portland area. You'll work independently in the field while staying in close communication with our service and dispatch team. We're looking for someone who understands drain and sewer systems, knows how to select the right equipment and approach for the problem, and can provide excellent service to our customers. This is a service position—not a sales position. We do not expect our drain technicians to use high-pressure sales tactics or upsell customers. We expect you to accurately diagnose problems, communicate your findings clearly, and provide quality work. What You'll Be Doing Diagnose and clear residential and commercial drain stoppages Clear kitchen, bathroom, floor, and other interior drain lines Clear and service main sewer lines Operate professional cable and drain-cleaning machines Perform hydro jetting when appropriate Perform sewer camera inspections Locate sewer lines and identify problem areas Diagnose recurring drain and sewer problems Remove roots and other obstructions from sewer lines Determine the appropriate equipment and cleaning method for each situation Identify conditions that may require additional plumbing or sewer repair Clearly explain findings and completed work to customers Communicate job status, findings, and recommendations with our service team Maintain accurate job documentation Properly maintain and care for company drain-cleaning equipment, tools, and vehicle Follow company safety procedures and professional standards Required Experience & Qualifications Applicants must have at least 3-5 years of professional drain and sewer cleaning experience. Qualified candidates should be experienced with: Residential and commercial drain cleaning Main sewer line cleaning Professional cable machines Hydro jetting equipment Sewer cameras and inspections Sewer and drain locating Drain and sewer diagnostics Root removal and difficult stoppages Selecting the proper equipment and technique for different drain conditions Maintain all drain cleaning equipment Working independently in the field Additional requirements: Valid driver's license Acceptable driving record Ability to safely operate a company vehicle Strong communication skills Excellent customer-service skills Ability to work independently without direct supervision Ability to communicate effectively with dispatchers, office staff, plumbers, and other members of the service team Dependable, professional, and punctual Comfortable using a smartphone and other basic technology for communication and job documentation Schedule Approximately 80% of the work will take place during normal business hours . Because drain and sewer problems don't always happen during business hours, approximately 20% of the position may involve work outside normal business hours , depending on customer and service needs. Applicants should be comfortable with occasional after-hours work. Physical Requirements Drain cleaning is physically demanding work.
