Sheet Metal Fabricator Okler Roofing | Kingsford, Michigan Okler Roofing is seeking a skilled Sheet Metal Fabricator to join our growing metal roofing and fabrication operation. This is a hands-on position for someone who understands metal fabrication, takes pride in precision work, and is comfortable operating professional sheet metal machinery. Our fabrication work directly supports residential and commercial roofing projects throughout Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin. This is not an assembly-line manufacturing position. Our Sheet Metal Fabricator will work with a variety of projects, measurements, profiles, materials, and custom components while supporting both our shop and field operations. The position will work extensively with our CNC sheet metal folder , roofing panel roll-forming equipment , and other fabrication machinery to manufacture metal roofing panels, trim, flashing, and custom sheet metal components. What You'll Be Doing As a Sheet Metal Fabricator, you'll be responsible for taking measurements, work orders, drawings, and field requirements and turning them into accurately fabricated finished products.

Responsibilities will include:

Set up and operate a CNC sheet metal folder to produce roofing trim, flashing, and custom metal components Program and operate CNC-controlled fabrication equipment based on required dimensions, bends, and profiles Set up and operate portable and shop-based roofing roll-forming equipment to manufacture standing-seam and other metal roofing panels Measure, mark, cut, bend, fold, roll, punch, drill, and form sheet metal to required dimensions Fabricate custom roofing components including flashing, rake trim, eave trim, ridge and hip components, valleys, transition metal, wall flashing, counterflashing, coping, edge metal, and other project-specific pieces Produce metal roofing panels to required lengths, profiles, and project specifications Read and interpret measurements, drawings, sketches, work orders, cut lists, and fabrication details Calculate bend locations and verify finished dimensions Select appropriate materials and confirm gauge, color, finish, and quantity before fabrication Work with painted and prefinished steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, copper Perform custom fabrication when standard components do not meet field conditions Perform basic welding and metal joining as required Use MIG welding and other welding/fabrication processes based on project needs and individual experience Cut, grind, deburr, finish, and prepare fabricated components Use shears, brakes, saws, grinders, drills, punches, hand tools, power tools, and other metalworking equipment Inspect completed pieces for dimensional accuracy, bend quality, finish, and overall workmanship Identify fabrication or measurement issues before material reaches the jobsite Coordinate with roofing crews, sales, operations, and project leadership to understand project-specific fabrication needs Assist with material staging and preparation for upcoming roofing projects Track material usage and help minimize unnecessary waste Maintain an organized inventory of metal coils, flat stock, fabrication materials, and commonly used components Perform routine cleaning, inspection, and basic preventative maintenance on fabrication equipment Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fabrication area Assist with troubleshooting equipment, tooling, and fabrication issues Occasionally assist with field measurements, machine setup, or fabrication directly at a project location Ability to use company technology, including apps and CRM software, as part of daily field & internal operations. What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who combines mechanical ability with attention to detail . The right person understands that being off by a fraction of an inch in the shop can become a much bigger problem once material reaches the roof. Accuracy, consistency, planning, and quality matter in this position. Preferred Experience & Skills Previous sheet metal fabrication, metal roofing, machining, welding, or related metalworking experience Experience operating CNC folders, press brakes, brakes, shears, or other sheet metal forming equipment Experience with CNC equipment is strongly preferred Experience operating roofing roll-forming equipment is strongly preferred Previous experience with standing-seam metal roofing or architectural sheet metal is highly valuable Understanding of roofing trim, flashing, transitions, penetrations, edge details, and related metal components Welding and general metal fabrication experience Ability to accurately read a tape measure and work with fractions and detailed measurements Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, sketches, cut lists, work orders, and project specifications Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to learn new machinery Ability to visualize how a flat piece of metal must be formed into a finished three-dimensional component Ability to troubleshoot fabrication challenges and develop practical solutions Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing clean, professional finished work Basic technology skills and ability to work with computerized machine controls Ability to work independently while also communicating effectively with field and operations teams Dependable, organized, and able to manage changing project priorities Roofing Experience Is Valuable — But Not the Only Background We're Considering While experience in metal roofing or architectural sheet metal would be an excellent fit for this position, we are also interested in experienced candidates coming from other fabrication environments.

More Than Repetitive Shop Production One of the things that makes this position different from a traditional production fabrication job is the variety. One day may involve producing long runs of metal roofing panels. The next may require programming the CNC folder for custom flashing, building a one-off component for an unusual roof condition, welding or modifying a fabricated piece, or working through a field measurement with the roofing team. Our projects require both precision and problem-solving . We're looking for someone who enjoys seeing raw material become a finished component—and understands that the quality of the work coming out of the fabrication shop directly affects the quality and efficiency of the installation happening in the field.
