Program Description:
The Development Program at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless supports the agency's financial sustainability and community presence through major gifts, planned giving, grants, individual donations, sponsorships, events, and community engagement initiatives. Working closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, program leadership, and community partners, the Development team builds relationships and secures resources that directly support LICH's trauma-informed, person-centered programs and services across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Development Program is shaped by LICH's specific mission, programs, community relationships, and organizational needs. Development staff are expected to bring their professional knowledge, experience, and new ideas to the agency while taking the time to understand LICH's individual programs, the populations and communities they serve, and each program's specific needs and priorities, and to adapt Development strategies accordingly. The program advances LICH's priorities by strengthening donor and community partnerships, expanding awareness and engagement, coordinating meaningful fundraising opportunities, and supporting compliance with public and private funding requirements.
Position Summary :
The Director of Development leads LICH's fundraising, grant development, donor engagement, community outreach, sponsorship, and special event efforts. The Director is responsible for developing and carrying out fundraising strategies that strengthen the agency's financial sustainability, build meaningful relationships with donors and community partners, and support LICH's programs and mission. Working closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, program leadership, and Development staff, the Director oversees Development initiatives from the initial planning stages through completion and follow-up. The Director directly supervises the Community Engagement Specialist and any other assigned Development staff, provides clear direction and support, and helps ensure that fundraising activities, events, sponsorships, donor communications, and community engagement efforts are well organized and consistent with LICH's mission, values, and priorities. Essential Responsibilities Fundraising and Donor Engagement Develop and carry out an annual Development plan that reflects LICH's mission, individual program needs, fundraising priorities, and available agency resources. Work with the Executive Director to establish annual fundraising goals, monitor progress, identify challenges and opportunities, and adjust strategies as needed. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, major and planned giving prospects, foundations, businesses, community organizations, and other potential supporters. Build and maintain meaningful relationships with current and prospective donors through consistent communication, acknowledgment, recognition, and opportunities to engage with LICH's mission. Develop fundraising appeals, donor communications, sponsorship materials, and other Development-related content in coordination with the Executive Director and appropriate program staff. Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors on donor outreach, introductions, solicitations, and stewardship activities. Ensure that fundraising strategies and communications accurately and respectfully reflect LICH's programs, services, and the experiences of the populations served. Events and Sponsorships Lead or support the Development-related aspects of LICH events, including fundraising, donor cultivation, community engagement, public awareness, and recognition events, from initial planning through completion and follow-up. Collaborate with the Executive Director, program leadership, and appropriate staff to establish event goals, clarify responsibilities, and develop timelines, budgets, work plans, sponsorship opportunities, and outreach strategies. Ensure that the Development team is appropriately involved in agency events, including Keys for the Homeless, BPP, the annual Vigil, and other events that may include fundraising, sponsorship, donor engagement, or community outreach components. Identify and cultivate prospective sponsors; develop sponsorship packages and recognition opportunities; coordinate sponsorship outreach; and ensure all sponsorship commitments are fulfilled. Coordinate Development-related event logistics, including invitations, registration, ticketing, promotional and sponsorship materials, donor communications, speakers, honorees, volunteers, vendors, and day-of-event responsibilities. Coordinate event-related contracts, invoices, deposits, certificates of insurance, permits, and other required documentation, as applicable, in accordance with agency procedures and approved budgets. Provide on-site support and leadership for events and remain available for occasional evening and weekend events, as required. Track applicable event revenue, expenses, attendance, sponsorship commitments, and engagement outcomes; complete donor, sponsor, and community partner follow-up; and participate in post-event evaluation. Grants and Funding Opportunities Research and evaluate funding opportunities from local, state, and federal government agencies, foundations, businesses, and other sources based on eligibility, program needs, agency capacity, funding restrictions, reporting requirements, and alignment with LICH's mission. Work with program leadership and appropriate staff to understand each program's services, funding needs, expected outcomes, and operational capacity before developing grant proposals. Gather accurate program information, outcome data, organizational documents, budgets, and other materials required for grant applications and reports. Write, edit, organize, and review grant proposals, applications, supporting documents, and funder reports in collaboration with the Executive Director, program leadership, finance staff, and other contributors. Maintain an organized grant management system that tracks funding opportunities, deadlines, assignments, submissions, award decisions, reporting requirements, renewals, correspondence, and supporting documentation. Monitor grant requirements and reporting deadlines and promptly communicate concerns that could affect compliance, funding, or LICH's ability to meet its obligations. Supervision and Development Program Oversight Directly supervise the Community Engagement Specialist and any other assigned Development staff by providing clear direction, regular supervision, training, support, and constructive feedback. Establish responsibilities, priorities, deadlines, and approval processes for fundraising, events, sponsorships, community engagement, and Development communications. Monitor staff assignments, progress, communication, and follow-through, and address performance concerns in coordination with the Executive Director and Human Resources. Encourage Development staff to contribute their professional knowledge and ideas while ensuring their work reflects LICH's mission, individual programs, organizational needs, and established procedures. Promote respectful communication, collaboration, accountability, and a positive team environment within the Development Program and across the agency. Provide oversight and guidance for LICH's website, social media, and other digital communications managed by Development staff. Community and Agency Collaboration Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, local businesses, civic and faith-based groups, volunteers, and other partners that support LICH's mission. Work collaboratively with program leadership and staff to understand LICH's individual programs, the populations and communities they serve, and their specific needs and priorities. Coordinate Development activities across departments to prevent duplicated or conflicting outreach and ensure that external commitments receive appropriate review and approval. Represent LICH professionally at community meetings, networking opportunities, donor visits, speaking engagements, and agency events. Ensure that Development communications and outreach are accurate, respectful, trauma-informed, and consistent with confidentiality requirements and the dignity of individuals with lived experience. Coordinate with program leadership and Development staff to ensure social media and other public-facing communications are accurate, consistent, and reflective of agency and program needs. Qualifications and Experience:
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, communications, business, public administration, or a related field, or a comparable combination of education and experience. At least five years of progressively responsible not-for-profit Development experience is preferred, including experience with major gifts, planned giving, donor cultivation and stewardship, events, sponsorship development, and public or private grant management. Experience securing significant charitable gifts, including gifts of $50,000 or more, is strongly preferred. The successful candidate must have supervisory or team-leadership experience, strong organizational and project-management skills, and knowledge of not-for-profit budgeting, financial reporting, and fundraising practices. Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, along with the ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, and work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with donor management, online fundraising, or event-management systems are expected. A valid driver's license and the ability to travel locally are required. Membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals or a related credential is preferred.
Work Location and Schedule :
This full-time position is based at LICH's main office in Amityville, New York. Occasional travel within Nassau and Suffolk Counties is required for meetings, events, and community engagement activities. Some evening and weekend responsibilities may also be required. After successful completion of the 90-day introductory period, the employee may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule with supervisor approval. Hybrid arrangements allow up to two remote workdays per week, not to exceed 14 hours. The employee must remain fully responsive and accessible during all scheduled work hours, regardless of work location. Hybrid schedules are not guaranteed and may be changed based on performance, productivity, supervisory discretion, or agency needs.
