(PCI Ecological) is seeking a Restoration/Landscape Crew Leader to join our team in Sebastopol, California. PCI is a small, multi-disciplinary firm that specializes in ecological restoration throughout Northern California. Our team of scientists, planners, landscape architects, engineers, and construction staff work collaboratively to produce high-quality outcomes for our clients. Our work focuses on environmental restoration, habitat enhancement, and landscape design, with an emphasis on rivers and floodplains to recover salmonid populations in California. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, team-oriented, and experienced in landscape construction, ecological restoration, vegetation management, forestry, or related field work. This is a hybrid field leadership and project support position. The Crew Leader will lead and work alongside field crews while also coordinating daily activities, project logistics, safety documentation, materials and equipment, and other project management-related tasks. The balance between field work and project support will vary depending on project needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and work alongside field crews performing ecological restoration, landscape construction and maintenance, revegetation, vegetation management, fuel reduction, forestry, and related work.
- Coordinate daily work assignments, materials, equipment, and site logistics.
- Train and mentor crew members in proper work techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
- Lead planting, seeding, irrigation, watering, mulching, erosion control, vegetation management, mowing, brush removal, fuel reduction, and plant establishment activities.
- Assist with stream restoration, bioengineering, fencing, trails, and other site construction.
- Safely operate hand and power tools, chainsaws, mowers, utility vehicles, and small equipment such as skid steers, mini excavators, and tractors as appropriate.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and equipment inspections and support PCI safety requirements.
- Complete project documentation including timesheets, receipts, supervisor reports, JHAs, daily safety reports, and mileage logs. Assist with materials and equipment procurement, maintenance coordination, crew scheduling, project logistics, and tracking project progress.
- As directed, assist with project management tasks including bid tours, cost estimates and proposals, RFIs, and obtaining vendor pricing.
- Maintain safe, productive, organized, and professional jobsites and communicate professionally with clients, landowners, agency staff, vendors, and other project representatives.
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in landscape maintenance, ecological restoration, forestry, vegetation management, construction, or related field work.
- Previous experience leading or directing small crews preferred.
- Experience with planting, irrigation, vegetation management, fuel reduction, erosion control, or landscape maintenance.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, mowers, and related equipment.
- Ability to read and follow site maps, plans, specifications, and work directives.
- Strong communication, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to construction and field safety.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to complete project documentation.
- California Class C driver license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel to project sites throughout California, including occasional overnight travel of up to three days. Education & Experience
- Related college coursework, degree, technical training, or industry certifications in natural resources, restoration, landscaping, forestry, or construction are desirable but not required.
- General knowledge of small equipment such as skid steers, mini excavators, skip loaders, and tractors; operating experience preferred. Desired Skills & Abilities
- Ability to speak and understand Spanish.
- Small equipment operating experience.
- Chainsaw and forestry experience.
- Familiarity with California native plants, invasive species management, irrigation, erosion control, bioengineering, and fuel reduction.
- Construction or equipment safety training.
- Class A or B California driver license.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Ability to perform active field work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven, remote, or rugged terrain.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, lift, carry, and work around tools and equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally handle heavier materials with assistance.
- Flexibility to respond to changing project schedules, weather, and field conditions.
Compensation:
This is a full time, hourly position with benefits including health, vision, dental and life/AD&D, Safe Harbor 401K Plan, paid holidays and paid time-off (PTO) after meeting eligibility requirements. Pay range is $30-$40 per hour depending upon experience.
