Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics

POSITION SUMMARY

Hiram College invites applicants for a full-time (9-month) visiting faculty position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics, beginning January 2027 and renewable through the spring of 2030. The primary purpose of the position is to deliver high-quality instruction in Classical and Medieval Studies, contribute to the liberal arts core curriculum of the College, and coordinate, plan, prepare, present, and assess classroom instruction and related academic activities. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching within a vibrant liberal arts tradition, evidence of scholarly activity, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration. We seek candidates who can connect ancient texts, material culture, and historical perspectives to modern inquiries and diverse student experiences. Special attention will be given to candidates with experience or interest in experiential learning, collaborative teaching across disciplines, or mentoring undergraduate research.

POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

: The successful candidate will teach 22-24 credit hours per year in a 3-3 teaching load across Hiram's semester structure (including 12-week and 3-week terms).

Teaching responsibilities include:

• Broad introductory and advanced courses in Classical and Medieval Studies.
• At least one course annually in Hiram's signature Urgent Challenges Curriculum / First-Year Program, connecting classical antiquity to contemporary global and ethical questions.
• Ancient language instruction in Latin and/or Ancient Greek, depending on student interest and curricular demand.

Additional responsibilities include academic advising, engaging in the intellectual life of the College through campus service, and maintaining an active scholarly agenda.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Ph. D. in Classics, Classical Studies, Ancient History, or a closely related field (ABD with confirmed completion date will be considered).

Preferred:

Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, particularly in a liberal arts setting; demonstrated capacity to teach classical languages (Greek/Latin) as well as broad interdisciplinary humanities courses; and experience designing first-year or core curriculum seminars.
