The Head Teacher provides leadership for an assigned classroom and is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where young children can grow and thrive. This position plans and implements developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support children's cognitive, language, physical, social, and emotional development. Key Responsibilities Plan, prepare, and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans aligned with program curriculum, Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS), and children's individual developmental needs. Create engaging learning experiences in language and literacy, mathematics, science, creative arts, physical development, and social-emotional learning. Observe, assess, and document children's developmental progress and use assessment information to guide instruction. Maintain a safe, healthy, nurturing, organized, and inclusive classroom environment. Provide active supervision of children and follow all program health, safety, and licensing requirements. Use positive, developmentally appropriate approaches to behavior guidance and classroom management. Maintain child portfolios, attendance records, assessments, and required classroom documentation. Build positive relationships with families and communicate regularly regarding children's development, classroom activities, and progress. Provide day-to-day guidance and support to Assistant Teachers, classroom aides, volunteers, interns, and practicum students assigned to the classroom. Participate in staff meetings, curriculum planning, professional development, family activities, and other ECEP and organizational initiatives. These responsibilities reflect the instructional, child-development, family-engagement, and classroom-leadership expectations in the full position description. Qualifications Must meet State of Connecticut Office of Early Childhood (OEC) Head Teacher qualification requirements . Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field required; bachelor's degree preferred. Experience working in a licensed early childhood education program required. Experience providing classroom leadership and supporting or mentoring other classroom staff preferred. Knowledge of child development, developmentally appropriate practices, CT ELDS, early childhood curriculum, and Connecticut OEC licensing requirements. Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop positive, professional relationships with children, families, colleagues, volunteers, and community partners. Ability to work collaboratively and provide effective classroom leadership. 3-5 years experience. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to actively engage with young children throughout the workday, including sitting on the floor, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and reaching. The Head Teacher must also be able to lift, carry, and assist children and classroom materials weighing up to 45 pounds and respond quickly to children's health, safety, and supervision needs.
