Job Description

Job Summary The Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, and preparing rental equipment to ensure it is safe, reliable, and ready for customer use or transport. This hands-on role plays a critical part in minimizing downtime, extending equipment life, and supporting our commitment to quality service in the equipment rental industry. Travel is required for occasional field repairs, equipment pickups/deliveries, or support at customer job sites as needed. Duties Perform thorough incoming and outgoing inspections on all rental equipment to identify & document damage, wear, or needed repairs. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel/gas engine issues on a variety of construction and industrial equipment. Execute preventive maintenance, routine servicing, and complex repairs including but not limited to: engines, transmissions, hydraulics, brakes, electrical systems, tracks, tires, and attachments. Repair or replace defective parts using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic tools. Test and operate equipment after repairs to verify proper function and safety. Clean, prep, and ready equipment for rental, delivery, or pickup—including basic load securement checks to ensure equipment is transport-ready. Maintain accurate service records, work orders, parts usage, and maintenance logs in our system. Assist with shop organization, inventory of parts/tools, and safety compliance. Respond to urgent repair needs to support quick turnarounds on rental fleet, which may include travel to job sites. Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, FMCSA cargo securement guidelines, and manufacturer recommendations. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational training in heavy equipment, diesel mechanics, or related field preferred. 2+ years of experience repairing heavy equipment, construction machinery, agricultural equipment, or similar (rental industry experience a plus). Strong knowledge of diesel/gas engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrains. Ability to read schematics, service manuals, and use diagnostic tools effectively. Welding and fabrication skills preferred. Valid driver's license with clean driving record required; Commercial Driver's License (CDL - Class A or B) a strong plus, especially for understanding transport requirements. Must have own basic set of mechanic tools (including sockets, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, and other hand tools essential for daily repairs; specialty tools and shop equipment provided by the company). Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work in a shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, and varying weather conditions (including occasional outdoor/field work). Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team. Travel is required (occasional local/regional travel for field service, equipment transport support, or emergency repairs; company vehicle provided when applicable). Preferred Skills Experience with brands commonly rented (e.g., Bobcat, Kubota, Makita, Genie, JLG, Ditch Witch, etc.). Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs for rental fleets. Knowledge of proper load securement practices and
DOT/FMCSA
cargo securement rules for heavy equipment transport (tie-down techniques, working load limits, blocking/bracing, etc.). ASE certifications (e.g., Medium/Heavy Truck series such as T2 Diesel Engines, T3 Drive Train, T6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, or related Truck Equipment series) a plus. Manufacturer-specific certifications or training (e.g., from Caterpillar, John Deere, Kubota, Genie, JLG, or similar equipment brands) a plus. Basic computer skills for logging service records.
