POSITION PURPOSE

The Operating Room Registered Nurse is to provide safe and effective nursing care to all patients utilizing the nursing process. Must have some experience in the operating room to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Operating Room Registered Nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of his/her assigned patients. He/she is also responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel. The position requires knowledge of both department and ambulatory surgery center policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of nursing care. Interpretive skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations, along with management and supervisory skills are inherent in this position. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is through the spoken word. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Communicate with Physicians when necessary. File chart notes and other medical information in appropriate chart, following proper charting procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

• Possess knowledge of planned procedure
• Assist anesthesia staff with induction, intra-operative management and emergency resulting from anesthesia
• Administers medication safely and accurately utilizing the seven rights (Right patient, medication, dose, time, route, documentation& right to refuse treatment)
• Maintains anesthetized patient's proper body alignment as determined by procedure.
• Plans for proposed surgical intervention by selecting appropriate equipment and supplies
• Assess each patient in the holding unit and verifies patient information, allergies, planned procedure and surgical site
• Perform item counts to include sponges, sharps and instruments as per center policy. Takes appropriate corrective action, is item count is not acceptable. Reports to Nurse Manager immediately.
• Documents all implantable devices or materials in medical records and log book
• Record specimen in the log book in the pathology room. Place specimen in plastic biohazard bag and put in bin for pick to outside lab and call for lab to be picked up
• Documents and communicates patient status, surgical intervention and pertinent information to post-op care givers following procedure(s).
• Before opening any supplies, check package integrity
• Upon arrival of the surgeon in the surgical area, anesthesia provider and the circulating nurse will take the patient to the O.R. room
• Transfer patient to OR room table with anesthesia and circulating nurse. Secure patient with the conductive safety belt. Remove stretcher from the operating room and get a warm blanket from the warmer for the patient. Never leave a sedated patient alone in the operating room
• Be available to assist anesthesia if needed while patient is being intubated. Keep room as quiet as possible during induction
• Position patient properly as to avoid pressure points which may cause nerve problems postoperatively
• Proceed with surgical prepping of operative area. Start at incision site and work your way out in a circular motion
• After patient is draped, proceed to position and connect all special equipment
• Be readily available to anticipate the needs of the doctor, anesthesiologist, and the scrub nurse
• Performs special assignment as outlined and defined by Charge Nurse and/or Manager

OTHER DUTIES

• Responsible and actively involved in the Quality Assessment / Performance Improvement activities
• Accepts and is receptive to constructive feedback to enhance abilities,.
• Uses free time constructively as determined by the Nurse Manager.
• Will perform all other duties as assigned, as determined by Nurse Manager and/or Managers.
• Responsive to patient needs solving patient problems and issues.
• Filing, faxing and copying as requested.
• Prepare correspondence/forms/letters etc. as requested by patients and faculty
• Experience with computerized scheduling systems and multi-line telephones.
• Experience with clinic procedures for pulling and tracking medical charts, x-rays, and other patient related documents.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
• Minimum of one-year related experience
• Registered Nurse license in the State of Florida
• Certified Basic Life Support/ACLS/PALS, AIDS, Domestic Violence, Medical Errors and Ergonomics.
• Knowledge

OSHA, HIPAA, AHCA

regulations, and Joint Commission accrediting organization regulations

• Effective communication skills: oral, written, and presentation.
• Effective positive interpersonal and customer relations skills via telephone and face-to-face interaction.
• Maintains Continuing Education Units (CEU's) as required by Florida Clinical Board
• Keeps job related skills current
• Maintains regular attendance
• Flexible schedule due to duration of cases
• Possess knowledge of modern office equipment, systems and procedures, computer skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.
• Ability to speak distinctly to be understood
