General Manager - Restaurant

Job Description

Schroeder's is a historic San Francisco institution and one of the city's most distinctive German beer halls. Known for its lively atmosphere, German-inspired food and beer, large-scale events, and energetic downtown crowd, Schroeder's combines the spirit of a traditional beer hall with the hospitality and energy of modern San Francisco. We are seeking an experienced, hands-on General Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of Schroeder's and take full ownership of the restaurant's performance. This includes sales and profitability, labor and cost controls, hiring and team development, service standards, food and beverage quality, facility maintenance, private events, safety, and compliance. The ideal candidate is a strong restaurant operator who understands that exceptional hospitality and strong financial performance go hand in hand. This person is highly visible on the floor, actively engaged with employees and guests, and equally comfortable coaching the team, reviewing a P&L, managing labor and costs, collaborating with culinary leadership, and stepping in wherever needed during a busy service. We are looking for a leader who can balance strong daily execution with the long-term development of the restaurant, its people, and its continued success as an iconic San Francisco establishment. What You'll Bring to the Team A genuine passion for hospitality and creating memorable guest experiences Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, develop, and hold teams accountable A positive, professional, solutions-oriented approach Experience managing a high-volume restaurant, bar, beer hall, or similar hospitality operation Strong understanding of restaurant financials, including labor, COGS, budgeting, forecasting, and P&L management Excellent communication and organizational skills The ability to balance hospitality, people, operational standards, and profitability A hands-on leadership style and willingness to be present and engaged on the floor Ability to work collaboratively with culinary leadership and the broader management team Strong judgment and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment Primary responsibilities: Leadership & Team Development Lead the day-to-day operation of Schroeder's and take ownership of the overall performance of the restaurant Recruit, train, coach, develop, and retain a strong management and hourly team Create a culture of accountability, teamwork, hospitality, and mutual respect Establish clear expectations and consistently follow up on performance Develop managers and emerging leaders within the restaurant Conduct regular manager and employee meetings, coaching conversations, and performance reviews Maintain a visible and engaged leadership presence during service Guest Experience & Operations Ensure consistently high standards of food, beverage, service, cleanliness, and hospitality Actively engage with guests and promptly resolve concerns Oversee opening, closing, service, cash handling, and daily operating procedures Maintain strong communication between front-of-house, back-of-house, events, and leadership teams Identify operational opportunities and implement solutions that improve efficiency and the guest experience Ensure the restaurant is properly staffed and positioned for both regular service and high-volume events Maintain the energy, atmosphere, and hospitality that make Schroeder's a unique San Francisco destination Financial Performance Take ownership of restaurant financial performance and operating results Manage labor effectively based on sales and business levels Monitor food, beverage, and operating costs and work with culinary and beverage leadership to achieve established targets Review P&L statements and identify opportunities to improve profitability Participate in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning Monitor sales trends, productivity, purchasing, inventory, waste, and controllable expenses Develop and execute strategies to grow revenue while maintaining strong cost controls Hold managers accountable for their respective areas of financial and operational performance Sales, Events & Community Partner with the sales and events team to successfully execute private events, large parties, corporate functions, and special events Help identify opportunities to increase restaurant, bar, and event revenue Build relationships with local businesses, neighborhood partners, regular guests, and the surrounding community Support programming, promotions, and special events that drive traffic and strengthen the Schroeder's brand Ensure seamless communication between operations and sales so that events are executed at a high level Compliance & Administration Ensure compliance with California and San Francisco employment requirements and company policies Maintain proper scheduling, timekeeping, meal and rest period practices, and employee documentation Ensure compliance with health, safety, alcohol service, and sanitation standards Maintain accurate operational, financial, payroll, and personnel records Ensure company policies, procedures, and standards are consistently followed Qualifications Minimum 3-5 years of restaurant management experience, with General Manager or senior management experience strongly preferred Experience in a high-volume, full-service restaurant and bar environment Proven ability to lead and develop large teams Strong understanding of restaurant P&Ls and financial performance Experience managing labor, inventory, purchasing, and cost controls Experience with private events and high-volume event execution is highly desirable Strong knowledge of food, beverage, beer, wine, and spirits Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as required by the business Familiarity with restaurant technology, including POS, scheduling, payroll, reservation, and event-management systems Knowledge of San Francisco restaurant operations and employment requirements is a plus The position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, navigate all areas of the restaurant, work in a fast-paced restaurant environment, and perform the physical functions reasonably associated with restaurant management. $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
