Investigates animal cruelty and neglect charges and performs related duties to promote compliance with laws regulating animal treatment. Observe areas of alleged violation and interview available witnesses to determine if laws are being violated, and inform violators of penaltiesProvides care and maintenance for the animals housed at the animal shelter. Monitors the health/wellness of animals in the shelter and administers medication and other basic tasks through medical treatment plans. Maintains cleanliness of the animal shelter facility, vehicles, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Answers calls for service involving domestic or wild animals
• Investigates complaints and prepares reports of daily activities.
• Photographs and collects evidence needed for proper investigation of animal-related violations.
• Removes animals from inhumane conditions.
• Conducts follow-up investigations to ensure compliance with city ordinances and state laws.
• Participates in vicious dog hearings.
• Patrols areas citywide seeking animals that are stray, sick, or injured.
• Retrieves deceased animals and disposes of them according to policy/law.
• Returns/releases claimed animals to rightful owners
• Maintainstheanimal shelter, ensuring cleanliness, efficient and orderly operation, the proper care of animals, and the availability of food, water, and other supplies
• Issues summons to violators of city ordinances and/or State laws.
• Transports animals, in cases of emergencies, to a veterinarian for treatment or euthanasia
• Obtains appropriate authorization for treatment or euthanasia
• Documents and submits specimens to the state lab for rabies testing; fills out required forms and records results when completed.
• Assists at rabies clinic
• Assists with fundraisers and special events.
• Testifies in court
• Maintainsrecords on all animals coming into the care and custody of the shelter and prepares reports, and forms, required by state law and/ or City ordinance
• Reviews /processes adoption applications, conducts meet & greets, and processes the adoption of animals impounded at the animal shelter.
• Processes payments of fees and /or donations.
• Provides for the exercise and enrichment of animals at the shelter.
• Assists with bathing & grooming of animals at the shelter.
• Attendance at community meetings; legal department meetings; city council and animal control meetings as needed.

Performs other duties that may be required or assigned by the Senior Animal Control Officer or Animal Shelter Administrator.

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus, five to seven years related experience. Must have a working knowledge of all laws about animal cruelty, speaking, and general office skills. Must know disease prevention protocols. Must be computer literate and have experience with animal shelter computer programs.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as interpreting the General Laws regarding animal cruelty. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization and deal effectively with the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram or schedule form.

Valid Drivers' License RI Animal Control Officer Certification
