Reports to: Director of Safety and Security
Summary
Operating under the direction of the Director of Safety and Security, the School Security Officer serves as a visible safety presence and first point of contact for safety and security concerns on District property. This position supports a safe and orderly learning environment by monitoring campus activity, responding to security incidents and emergencies, and collaborating closely with students, staff, administrators, and law enforcement. The School Security Officer works proactively to prevent incidents through relationship-building, observation, and enforcement of District policies and applicable laws. Duties are primarily performed during regular school hours, with additional assignments during school events as needed. Job Responsibility Description
Campus Patrol & Security Presence
Conduct routine patrols of assigned District buildings, parking lots, and grounds on foot and in District vehicles to detect suspicious behavior, safety standards, or criminal activity
Identify and respond to incidents including vandalism, theft, trespassing, drug-related activity, and potential life-safety threats
Maintain consistent visibility and establish positive working relationships with students and staff
Communicate regularly with school principals, administrators, or designees regarding campus safety concerns Student & Staff Safety Support
Serve as safety resource for students and staff through proactive engagement and relationship building
Intervene as necessary to prevent or stop fights, disturbances, or unsafe behavior using approved de-escalation techniques
Issue warnings, document incidents, and refer disciplinary or safety matters to building administrators
Coordinate with school administration and law enforcement during investigations or criminal incidents or policy violations Emergency Response & Incident Documentation Respond to alarm activations and emergency situations during assigned hours
Assess site security, document concerns, and assist responding police officers and District personnel
Conduct preliminary investigations and prepare written and verbal incident reports for use in administration or criminal proceedings
Provide information and documentation in support of investigations; occasional court testimony may be required Communication & Reporting
Maintain timely communication with supervisors regarding ongoing concerns, unresolved issues, or safety trends
Complete reports, summaries, and recommendations in accordance with District policies and procedures Annual Safety Assessments
Conduct annual safety and security assessments of assigned District sites
Prepare and submit required reports within established timelines
Event Security Coverage Provide security support at school functions, athletic events, and special activities as scheduled
Promote order and safety through visible presence and engagement with attendees
Other Duties
Additional tasks, duties, and responsibilities may be assigned as needed/requested.
Education and Experience Acceptable demonstration of acceptable education and/or experience will be at the sole discretion of the District.
Minimum age requirement: 21 years
High school diploma or GED required
Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification or acceptable equivalent required at hire (previous POST certifications accepted up to five years)
Minimum of two years of prior law enforcement and/or military police experience required
Colorado Firearms Conceal Carry Permit required within 60 days of hire
Acceptable equivalent education and experience determined at the District's discretion Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
Criminal background check required
Pre-employment psychological assessment required
Pre-employment physical fitness-for-duty assessment required
Successful completion of District firearm qualification upon hire
Valid Colorado Driver's License required
Submit a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and meet the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool (CSDSIP) insurability standards at the time of hire and throughout employment
CPR and First Aid certification required within 90 days of hire
Completion of all required training as directed, including recurring firearms qualification Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to be adaptable and flexible with collaborative critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
Strong customer service skills, with the ability to provide support in a professional and approachable manner
Commitment to handling sensitive and confidential information with the highest ethical standards
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff and various stakeholders
Ability to lead, communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds
Ability to follow applicable federal, state, local laws and Board of Education policies, in addition to building and department procedures
Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator
De-escalation and conflict management skills to manage volatile and high stress situations
Ability to work independently with sound judgment and minimal supervision
Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and respond effectively to frequent interruptions and emergent situations
Strong observation skills and attention to detail to identify threats, safety concerns, and suspicious activity
Ability and willingness to adhere to attendance requirements due to the safety critical nature of the role
Ability to intervene in physical conflict and restrain individuals when necessary, consistent with training and policy
Knowledge of District rules and regulations to protect people and property and prevent safety incidents
