Position Summary The Lead Fleet Mechanic owns the mechanical condition of B&M Builders' entire fleet — pickups, medium-duty trucks, trailers, and construction equipment supporting the Civil, HVAC Construction, and HVAC Service divisions. This position diagnoses problems correctly before equipment leaves the yard, performs preventive maintenance and in-house repairs, and decides what is repaired internally versus sent to a dealer or specialty shop. The Lead Fleet Mechanic also carries the administrative side of the fleet: service schedules, regulatory inspections, registrations, maintenance records, and outside vendor relationships. This is a working supervisor role — the person in it turns wrenches daily while directing and training the existing shop employees. Key Responsibilities Diagnosis & Repair Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems accurately before equipment is released to a job or sent to an outside shop. Perform repairs on batteries, starting and charging systems, brakes, cooling systems, suspension, steering, and general electrical faults. Service and repair pickups, medium-duty trucks, trailers, and construction equipment across all three divisions. Troubleshoot using scan tools, manufacturer service information, and diagnostic software, and verify every repair before returning the unit to service. Respond to field breakdowns, determine whether the unit can be repaired on site or must be recovered, and coordinate towing when needed. Preventive Maintenance Build and maintain the preventive maintenance schedule for every fleet asset based on mileage, hours, and manufacturer intervals. Perform scheduled PM services including fluids, filters, lubrication, belts, hoses, tires, and wear items. Inspect equipment on return from jobs and before mobilization, and correct defects before the unit goes back out. Track recurring failures and adjust service intervals or component specifications to stop repeat problems. Repair Routing & Vendor Management Decide what is repaired in-house versus sent to a dealer, specialty shop, or mobile service based on cost, downtime, warranty, and shop capability. Source parts, obtain and compare quotes, and manage parts inventory and shop supplies. Manage outside vendors — schedule work, review estimates and invoices for accuracy, and hold vendors to turnaround commitments. Track repair cost by asset and flag equipment where repair spend no longer justifies keeping the unit. Fleet Compliance & Records Maintain service schedules, inspection records, and complete repair history for every asset in Team BM. Manage DOT and BIT inspections, annual equipment inspections, and any required regulatory testing. Handle vehicle registrations, renewals, emissions requirements, and title documentation. Review driver vehicle inspection reports, close out reported defects, and document the corrective action taken. Maintain warranty documentation and pursue warranty claims where coverage applies. Shop Leadership & Safety Direct the day-to-day work of shop employees, assign repairs, and set priorities against field demand. Train shop staff and field operators on inspection, servicing, and proper equipment use. Enforce shop safety practices including lockout/tagout, hot work, personal protective equipment, and proper handling and disposal of fluids and waste. Keep the shop, tooling, and yard organized, and recommend tooling and equipment purchases. Coordinate daily with superintendents, foremen, and service managers on equipment availability and priorities. Required Qualifications 7+ years of hands-on mechanical experience on trucks and construction equipment, including at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity. Demonstrated ability to diagnose engine, drivetrain, electrical, hydraulic, brake, and cooling system faults across a mixed fleet. Working knowledge of California fleet compliance requirements, including DOT and BIT inspections, DMV registration, and emissions programs. Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record; Class A or Class B license preferred. Own hand tools, and the ability to use diagnostic scan tools and manufacturer service software. Welding and fabrication ability preferred; ASE or equivalent manufacturer certifications preferred. Computer literacy sufficient to maintain work orders, service history, and fleet records in Team BM. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with field crews, management, and outside vendors. Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Shop and yard based, with travel to job sites for field repairs and inspections. Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting using assistance or equipment. Extended periods standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and working under and on top of equipment. Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, fluids, and outdoor weather conditions. Occasional after-hours or weekend response for breakdowns and critical repairs.
