Job Description

General Information Performs skilled mechanical and technical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, service, and preventive maintenance of District fleet vehicles and specialized equipment. Maintains gasoline- and diesel-powered engines and related mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic systems. Uses diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and computerized work-order systems to identify and resolve equipment problems and ensure vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable requirements. Reporting Relationship Reports to the Director of Transportation or the Maintenance Supervisor or Distribution Manager (depending on the area in which this position is assigned. Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties: Vehicle and Equipment Repair Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, services, and maintains District vehicles, specialized equipment, small engines, and related accessories. Diagnoses and repairs gasoline- and diesel-powered internal combustion engines and associated mechanical systems and components. Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains complex electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Uses appropriate diagnostic equipment, testing procedures, service information, and technical manuals to identify equipment problems and determine appropriate repairs. Performs road tests and operational testing following repairs and maintenance to verify proper performance, safety, and reliability. Performs welding, cutting, fabrication, and related metal repair using acetylene, arc-welding, and other approved equipment and techniques. Removes, repairs, replaces, adjusts, and installs vehicle and equipment components and accessories in accordance with manufacturer specifications and established maintenance practices. Determines when repairs require specialized services or parts and coordinates work with approved third-party vendors when authorized. Preventive Maintenance and Safety Develops and follows preventive maintenance schedules for assigned vehicles and equipment to promote safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation. Conducts inspections and routine maintenance in accordance with established schedules, manufacturer recommendations, applicable regulations, and District requirements. Inspects new vehicles and equipment upon receipt to verify condition, specifications, components, and features comply with purchase or contract requirements. Inspects vehicles and equipment to identify safety concerns, defects, required repairs, and maintenance needs. Verifies completed repairs and maintained equipment meet applicable safety, operational, and regulatory requirements before returning them to service. Maintains accurate maintenance and repair records, including documentation of inspections, diagnoses, repairs, parts, services, and preventive maintenance activities. Parts, Materials, and Work Orders Identifies and obtains parts, materials, supplies, and specialized services necessary to complete assigned repairs and maintenance in accordance with District purchasing procedures. Monitors assigned parts, materials, and supply inventories and identifies replenishment needs. Enters, updates, and closes work orders and maintenance records in the District's computerized corrective and preventive maintenance system. Maintains and organizes current service, repair, maintenance, and technical manuals and reference materials for District vehicles and equipment. Communication and Service Communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, drivers, equipment operators, vendors, and other District personnel regarding equipment conditions, repair needs, service status, and recommended corrective actions. Explains mechanical or technical problems, repair requirements, and equipment status in terms appropriate to the audience. Completes required forms, work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, and daily documentation accurately and within established timelines. Provides technical guidance and assistance to less experienced employees and supports the training and development of assigned staff. Uses appropriate judgment to prioritize work based on safety, operational needs, equipment availability, and established departmental priorities. Supports the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities Strategic Plan by contributing to a safe, reliable, efficient, and service-oriented work environment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques used to inspect, diagnose, repair, service, and perform preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and specialized equipment. Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines and associated mechanical systems and components. Considerable knowledge of automotive and equipment electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Considerable knowledge of diagnostic procedures, testing methods, preventive maintenance practices, and repair processes. Considerable knowledge of hand and power tools, diagnostic instruments, shop equipment, welding equipment, and other equipment used in vehicle and equipment maintenance. Working knowledge of applicable safety practices, equipment operating requirements, and relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and work-order systems and technology used to document and manage maintenance activities. Skilled in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine-related problems and determining appropriate repair methods. Skilled in performing repairs, adjustments, component replacement, preventive maintenance, and operational testing on a variety of vehicles and equipment. Skilled in using hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, shop equipment, welding equipment, and other specialized maintenance tools. Skilled in reading and interpreting technical manuals, service specifications, wiring diagrams, schematics, and diagnostic information. Skilled in accurately documenting inspections, diagnoses, repairs, maintenance activities, parts usage, and work performed using computerized work-order and other recordkeeping systems. Skilled in using computers, mobile devices, and other technology necessary to perform assigned duties. Ability to independently assess equipment problems, determine appropriate corrective action, and complete assigned repairs within established procedures and priorities. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, meet established deadlines, and respond appropriately to urgent equipment and operational needs. Ability to exercise sound judgment when evaluating vehicle and equipment condition, safety, serviceability, repair requirements, and readiness for return to service. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and apply established procedures, specifications, and safety requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain productive working relationships with employees, supervisors, customers, vendors, and other stakeholders. Ability to provide technical guidance, work direction, and training to less experienced personnel. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Ability to learn and apply new vehicle technologies, equipment systems, diagnostic methods, and maintenance procedures. Ability to consistently follow established safety procedures and requirements when performing assigned work. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED certificate. Must have successfully completed one (1) of the following qualification pathways: Experience must demonstrate progressively responsible responsibility for the diagnosis, repair, servicing, and preventive maintenance of gasoline- and/or diesel-powered vehicles, equipment, and related mechanical systems. Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and/or pneumatic systems and components. Demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, shop equipment, and other tools commonly used in vehicle and equipment maintenance. Demonstrated ability to read and apply technical manuals, service specifications, schematics, wiring diagrams, and repair information. Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver¿s License (CDL) with air-brake endorsement , or an equivalent out-of-state commercial driver's license, with no suspensions or revocations within the previous two (2) years. Candidates who do not possess the required CDL at the time of hire must obtain it within six (6) months of employment. Must successfully complete PRO 10 training through the union within six (6) months of employment, if required by the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The candidate¿s driving record will be reviewed prior to an offer of employment and must meet District requirements for operation of District vehicles and equipment. Preferred Qualifications Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in fleet, automotive, heavy-duty vehicle, school bus, construction equipment, or specialized equipment maintenance. Experience maintaining and repairing a diverse public-sector or institutional fleet. Experience diagnosing and repairing advanced electronic, computerized, hydraulic, pneumatic, and emissions-control systems. Experience using computerized diagnostic tools and preventive/corrective maintenance work-order systems. Formal technical training or postsecondary coursework in automotive technology, diesel technology, heavy equipment maintenance, or a closely related field. ASE certification or other nationally recognized industry certification relevant to the position. Welding certification or demonstrated formal training in welding and metal fabrication. Experience providing technical guidance, training, or work direction to technicians, trainees, or other maintenance personnel. Experience inspecting newly purchased vehicles or equipment for compliance with specifications, contractual requirements, and applicable standards. Experience working in a unionized, public-sector, educational, or similarly complex organizational environment. Physical Requirements Frequently uses hands and fingers to grip, grasp, manipulate, position, and control tools, parts, components, and equipment. Frequently kneels, crouches, squats, bends, crawls, and reaches at, below, and above shoulder level to access vehicle and equipment components. Frequently maintains fixed, extended, or awkward positions and performs repetitive movements involving the neck, back, trunk, arms, and hands. Occasionally lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls tools, parts, materials, and equipment weighing up to 85 pounds. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate tools, components, fasteners, controls, and small parts. Requires sufficient visual and auditory acuity to perform work safely, including observing equipment components and conditions and detecting sounds associated with vehicle and equipment operation. Mental Requirements Requires sustained attention and concentration during inspections, repairs, maintenance, testing, and other tasks where accuracy and safety are critical. Requires attention to detail when working with small components, connections, measurements, adjustments, and other precision tasks. Requires the ability to maintain focus while working in a busy maintenance environment with routine interruptions, background noise, and competing demands. Requires the ability to make timely decisions when unexpected conditions, equipment failures, or safety concerns arise during assigned work. Requires the ability to remain calm and composed when responding to urgent repairs, equipment breakdowns, or operational disruptions. Requires the ability to shift attention between tasks and adjust to changing work demands without compromising safety or work quality. Requires the ability to exercise appropriate caution and situational awareness when working around moving vehicles, machinery, elevated equipment, energized systems, hazardous materials, and other workplace hazards. Requires the ability to maintain accurate mental awareness of work status, equipment condition, and safety considerations throughout extended or complex maintenance activities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily in a vehicle maintenance shop, garage, or other fleet maintenance facility and may also occur at District facilities, outdoor work areas, or other locations where vehicles and equipment are housed or operated. Regular exposure to vehicle exhaust, fuels, oils, lubricants, solvents, cleaning agents, dust, dirt, grease, fumes, odors, noise, vibration, and other substances or conditions associated with vehicle and equipment maintenance. Work may involve proximity to moving vehicles and machinery, elevated vehicles and equipment, energized electrical components, pressurized hydraulic and pneumatic systems, hot surfaces and engine components, welding operations, and other occupational hazards. Work requires compliance with applicable safety procedures and may involve the use of personal protective equipment and established controls for hazardous materials, welding, electrical systems, vehicle lifts, and other shop hazards. Work may be performed in varying indoor and outdoor temperatures and weather conditions, particularly during road testing, field service, inspections, or repairs conducted outside the maintenance facility. Work schedule may occasionally extend beyond normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency response, based on District operational needs. Travel between District facilities and other work locations may be required to support fleet maintenance and equipment operations. written test will be administered to create an eligible list of candidates for this position. Once created, the list will be used for all Vehicle Mechanic vacancies that may occur for one year. The test will be administered after the job posting closes and all applications are screened. You will be notified by Human Resources of the test via email.
EXAMINATION
This test is available for promotional and open entrance candidates. Practical Exam.......................................Weight 100% You will be notified of the results of the examination through email. Candidates who pass the examination with a score of at least 75% will be placed on the eligible list.
