JOB SUMMARY

The position involves performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled work in maintaining vehicles and equipment, maintenance and construction work, and operating a variety of heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of roadways, storm drainage and other public works facilities and systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Evaluates vehicles and equipment for repair, preventive maintenance, and servicing. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments, hand, electric, and air-driven tools. Inspects, repairs and services vehicles and equipment. Cuts and welds various metals. Evaluates safety of vehicles and equipment. Determines purchases for parts and supplies. Cuts and welds various metals. Operates heavy equipment of various sizes and types including loader, backhoe, grader, oil distributor, hilift, etc. Operates dump and other trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials or equipment. Operates dump truck with a snowplow and salt/cinder spreader in the removal of ice and snow. Operates trucks pulling a float or other equipment. Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance records, phone bids, inventory, parts, materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary. Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Operates light and medium sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, brush hog, chain saw, jackhammer, or mechanized broom. Performs all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures. Assists in the training of new or lower level employees to increase their skills and promote safety in the maintenance and construction of roads and storm drainage facilities. Places traffic control devices and performs duties as flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the County's standards and guidelines. Performs some work as part of the County's Emergency Operations Plan. Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours. Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
