Position Type:
substitute to start ASAP Position Overview The Cape Cod Collaborative Transportation Department is seeking a dependable and qualified LTS Substitute School Bus / Fleet Mechanic to join our maintenance team. This role is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, state inspections, and repairs on our fleet of school buses, vans, and specialty transit vehicles. Your work directly ensures the safety, comfort, and reliable transport of students across our member school districts. We are encouraging candidates with a wide range of experience to apply. We are willing to compensate based upon the applicant's experience level. Key Responsibilities & Essential Duties
Fleet Maintenance & Repair:
Perform routine preventative maintenance (oil/filter changes, fluid flushes, tire rotations, brake adjustments, tune-ups, and lubrication). Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic/air brake, suspension, heating/AC, and engine systems on gasoline and diesel vehicles. Address defects reported on daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) submitted by drivers in a timely manner. Perform minor bodywork, fender/bumper replacements, and interior repairs.
Safety & Inspection Compliance:
Inspect and prepare vehicles for Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) school bus safety inspections. Ensure all fleet repairs meet Cape Cod Collaborative standards as well as state and federal safety regulations.
Recordkeeping & Inventory:
Maintain accurate physical and digital work orders, maintenance logs, and service records. Track inventory of tools, parts, and shop supplies; report inventory needs to management. Coordinate with the Lead Mechanic on warranty work and manufacturer recalls.
Operational Support:
Provide emergency roadside service/breakdown response as needed. Assist with seasonal fleet preparation, including winter starting routines and facility snow removal when required. Qualifications & Requirements
Experience:
Documented experience repairing and servicing school buses, medium/heavy-duty trucks, or commercial fleets.
Education:
Vocational/technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics is highly preferred.
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid Driver's License required. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL Class B with Passenger & School Bus endorsements) preferred, or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire. Knowledge of MA RMV school bus inspection procedures; ASE Certifications (Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus) a plus.
Skills:
Proficiency with diagnostic equipment and shop hand/power tools. Ability to read technical manuals and electrical/hydraulic schematics. Physical ability to stoop, kneel, crawl, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly in a shop environment. Work Schedule & Benefits
Hours:
40 hours/week for 12 weeks or more. Occasional on-call duty for emergency repairs or winter weather operations. Pay range: Expected hourly rate of pay ranging from $25 per hour to $45 per hour. Overtime as available
