Job Description

Overview The Painter/Blaster is responsible for Paint/Blasting tank walls, equipment, buildings, and other structural surfaces, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns. May remove old paint to prepare surface prior to painting. May mix colors or oils to obtain desired color or consistency. This position is an Individual Contributor role and directly reports to the Paint Supervisor. Responsibilities
  • Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  • Selects and mixes coating additives to thin or promote drying and adhesion.
  • Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  • Uses high air-pressure sandblasting equipment, chemical application, chipping hammer, power tools and other abrasives to remove rust, grease, dirt, concrete, and old paint prior to paint application.
  • Apply primers or sealers to prepare surfaces, such as bare wood, metal, piping, fixtures, structures and equipment for finish coats.
  • Selects paint according to company color scheme and specifications.
  • Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to heavy equipment, buildings, bridges, and/or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, sandblasting equipment, or rollers. May use epoxy, latex or enamel coatings.
  • Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements and/or work orders.
  • Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors or homeowners in order to determine work requirements.
  • Disassemble paint and sandblasting equipment and cleans equipment, using solvent, wire brushes, and dry cloth.
  • Erect scaffolding and swing gates, or set up ladders, to work above ground level.
  • Remove fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
  • Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
  • Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order to obtain desired colors and consistencies. Respiratory protection is common and required in many applications.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.
  • Performs other duties as required.

NP Sedentary Work:

  • Painters must have the ability to use the following tools and equipment: Tape measure, straight edge, level, chalk line, material handling equipment, inspection equipment, hoists, hammers, pry bar, fit-up bar, wrenches, wire rope slings, shackles, hand wire brush, paint brush and rollers, sanding blocks, hand sanders.
Power hand tools including grinders, drill mixers, industrial paint sprayers, industrial blast pots, wire brushes, saws and impact wrenches.
  • Safety equipment: Hardhat, safety glasses with side shields, full body harness with double lanyard, earplugs, respiratory protection, gloves.
  • Access elevated work platforms and scaffolds through use of ladders, stairways, or other designed access ways.
  • Climb structures utilizing appropriate fall protection and available handholds and footholds.
  • Understand verbal instructions and written posted notices.
  • Capable of learning to read and understand basic drawings.
  • Able to pass required safety exams.
  • Practice good housekeeping to maintain a clean, orderly and safe work area.
  • Comply with all written and verbally communicated safety rules and procedures
  • Work in confined spaces where respirators and fresh air equipment are utilized.
  • Outdoor exposure to weather elements (heat, cold, sun, snow, wind, rain etc.)
  • Work effectively at heights without disorientation on construction scaffolds and ladders which may be heights over 100ft while utilizing fall protection
  • Work in confined spaces
