Job Description

Position Summary The Molecular Laboratory Technician performs high-complexity molecular testing in a CLIA/CAP-compliant PCR laboratory. This role is responsible for specimen processing, nucleic acid extraction, PCR setup, instrument operation, quality control, documentation, and result workflow support. The technician ensures accurate, timely, and compliant testing while maintaining strict contamination control and laboratory best practices. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented professional passionate about molecular diagnostics, quality systems, and building excellence in a growing laboratory environment. Key Responsibilities Specimen Processing & Accessioning Receive, verify, and accession clinical specimens following laboratory SOPs. Evaluate specimen acceptability and document rejections according to policy. Maintain chain-of-custody and sample traceability. Prepare and aliquot specimens in designated clean areas. Molecular Testing & PCR Workflow Perform nucleic acid extraction (manual and/or automated). Prepare PCR master mix, controls, and reagents.
Perform assay setup for:
Real-time PCR (qPCR) RT-PCR assays Multiplex molecular assays (as applicable) Operate and maintain PCR instruments and related equipment. Follow strict unidirectional workflow and contamination prevention procedures. Quality Control & Compliance Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly QC procedures.
Run and review:
Positive and negative controls Internal controls Extraction controls Identify and report QC failures or deviations immediately. Adhere to CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, and laboratory safety regulations. Assist with proficiency testing and competency assessments. Documentation & Reporting Support Accurately complete laboratory logs including: Maintenance logs Cleaning logs Temperature logs Reagent and lot tracking Maintain batch worksheets and testing records. Assist in preparing results for supervisor review and release. Support audit readiness and regulatory inspections. Laboratory Maintenance & Safety Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Maintain inventory of reagents and consumables. Prepare reagents and ensure proper storage and labeling. Follow biosafety and chemical safety protocols. Maintain cleanliness and organization of PCR work areas. Quality & Professional Standards Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information. Demonstrate strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy. Follow all laboratory SOPs and quality management systems. Participate in process improvement and workflow optimization. Maintain professionalism in a fast-paced diagnostic environment. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in: Molecular Biology Medical Laboratory Science Biology, Biotechnology, or related field Experience in PCR or molecular laboratory techniques. Knowledge of laboratory quality systems and documentation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Ability to work in a regulated clinical laboratory environment. New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Technician License Preferred Qualifications Experience in a CLIA high-complexity laboratory. Experience with real-time PCR instrumentation. Familiarity with LIMS and electronic result reporting. Experience in startup or fast-growing laboratory settings. Physical & Work Environment Work in a laboratory setting with biohazardous materials. Use of PPE required. May require standing for extended periods and repetitive pipetting.
Pay:
$21.00 - $25.00 per hour
