Job Description

This Perioperative RN position is located at Deer Lodge Medical Center in Deer Lodge Montana. Are you a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse with a passion for surgical patient care? We are seeking a dedicated Perioperative RN to join our growing surgical services team. This role is ideal for a nurse who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to delivering exceptional patient outcomes throughout the surgical experience. This position would be 24-40 hours/week. Previous Pre-Op, PACU, ambulatory care, critical care or general nursing experience is a plus. GENERAL DUTIES AND CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Completes work accurately and completely in an acceptable time frame consistent with the surgical flow and independently. b. Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrates flexibility as job priorities change, willing to take on new work routines/methods. c. Carries out duties in a way that is most productive/effective. d. Deals with job stress effectively during peak workload occasions. e. Functions as a team player and demonstrates a positive, "can do" attitude. f. Demonstrates knowledge, understanding and application of hospital policies/procedures in performing job functions. g. Performs pre-operative assessments and prepares for upcoming surgical procedures by use of pre-op checklist; ensures all necessary procedural paperwork is properly completed prior to the procedure; ensures all pre-procedure orders are met. h. Performs intra-operative patient assessment, ensures patient safety throughout the procedure. i. Performs patient assessments following a surgical procedure that meets the best practice standards, understands the post anesthesia implications and pathophysiology of the post op period as it related to the nursing function and assessments. j. Uses local resources (manuals, reference materials, colleagues, supervisors) to insure course of action. k. Demonstrates sound judgment in handling situations not covered by written, verbal directions. l. Open to change, manages change positively, willingly evaluates and adapts actions as the hospital and external healthcare environment changes. m. Seeks additional tasks during times of light workload, recognizes duties to be performed although not directly assigned. n. Demonstrates willingness to assist/orient new employees and willingness to adjust personal schedule periodically as workload fluctuates and department needs require. o. Identifies and makes recommendations for department processes to improve in service effective and efficiency. p. Takes responsibility to complete initial/annual competencies as directed. q. Willingly keeps up with information necessary for job, identifies learning needs. r. Knowledge of basic computer skills and ability to learn and apply new technologies and skills. s. Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. t. Flexibility related to scheduling and clinical responsibilities is required, to meet patient, family, and program needs. u. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. v. Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and to shifts in organizational philosophy and expectations. w. Ability to identify personal opportunities for growth and learning; ability to assume responsibility for continuous clinical and professional knowledge and skills. x. Follows safety & security policies & procedures, immediately reporting suspicious activities and unsafe conditions. Uses and maintains equipment, tools & materials properly. y. The employee follows all DLMC infection control policies and procedures, including the handling of blood and/or body fluid substances. Utilizes universal precautions with all patient assignments and participates in supporting performance improvement initiatives and quality measures activities established at DLMC. z. Works with integrity, upholding DLMC mission and values, while maintaining confidentiality in all situations. Demonstrates and exhibits behavior congruent with the philosophy and mission of DLMC. Refuses to participate in unethical procedures or activities and notifies appropriate authority of observed incompetence or unethical behavior. Accepts assignments away from usual assigned area with a positive and cooperative attitude. aa. Participates in all mandatory meetings, in services and job training, including attending at least 75% (nine out of twelve) of the mandatory monthly staff meetings. bb. Adheres to requirements, policies and procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or other Hospital/Clinic practices to perform patient care cc. duties which ensure high-quality patient care in accordance with licensure, DLMC policy, and scope of practice.
Clinical:
1. Knowledge of human growth and development to modify care to the age and developmental status of the patient population served. 2. Knowledge of patient safety according to the assigned department. 3. Demonstrated skills and ability to assess, plan, implement, evaluation, documentation, coordinate and provides teaching/counseling to clients and their families in a holistic manner. 4.
Assessment:
a. Obtains the necessary and relevant information from the patient to effectively deliver quality nursing care through interviews, examinations, and observations. Assessment can occur in person or during telephone triage. b. Uses all available sources of information to systematically collect data on the physical, psychological, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of the patient to establish a baseline for the analysis and identification of nursing problems. c. Documentation of assessments is accurate, concise, and completed in a timely manner. 5.
Planning:
a. Identifies and addresses each of the problems identified based on nursing assessment. For each problem a measurable goal is set resulting in a Plan of Care. b. Documentation of planning is accurate, concise, and completed in a timely manner. Plan of Care is communicated at handoff. c. Participates in multidisciplinary team rounds and contributes to the development of the multidisciplinary plan of care as indicated. 6.
Implementation:
a. Delivers direct, evidence-based patient care based on individualized needs of the patient. b. Provides effective, efficient, safe, and appropriate interventions, with a central focus on patient evaluation, management of acute and ongoing care, and development and modification of treatment plans. c. Serve as first point of contact for plan of care questions/issues between visits with provider. d. Documentation of implementation is accurate, concise, consistent with regulatory requirements and hospital policies and timely. 7.
Teaching:
a. Assesses patient/family learning needs based on plan of care. b. Successfully incorporates patient/family teaching into daily practice. c. Begins discharge teaching at time of admission. Teaching may occur in person or by telephone. Community providers/partners for execution of plan of care and learning needs are included. (Ambulatory) d. Documents patient/family education per hospital policies. Precepts staff and participates in the educational process for students of all health care disciplines. 8.
Evaluation:
a. Evaluates nursing care interventions and progress toward goals to assess the degree to which the health care team has assisted the patient in meeting their health care needs. b. Adjusts nursing care interventions accordingly as patient health care needs change. c. Appraises current clinical care standards of practice with the goal of improving patient care. Modifies plan of care based on evaluation of patient responses to care. d. Documentation of evaluation is accurate, concise, and completed in a timely manner. 9.
Care Coordination:
a. Collaborates with family and health care team to coordinate care across the care continuum. b. Creative in assisting family and community partners with execution of plan of care in the home. c. Identifies and uses appropriate resources to provide family-centered, culturally competent, comprehensive, cost-effective care to achieve optimal outcomes. 10.
Communication:
a. Communicates clearly, effectively, and respectfully with patients, families, and members of the health care team, including timely and effective exchange of information with other providers, and with patients, families, and referring agencies. Includes verbal and written communication in an appropriate and timely fashion, i.e. charting and reporting. b. Utilizes chain of command as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes. c. Uses standard process for handoffs between caregivers, including shift to shift or transfers to another site of care. 11.
Professional Development:
a. Is accountable for personal professional development and practice. b. Takes part in departmental and organizational opportunities to gain further clinical knowledge and skills and maintain and improve clinical competence. c. Active participation in unit specific communication venues (staff meetings, weekly bulletins, etc.) d. Adheres to professional nursing standards of behavior, including ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, with sensitivity to diverse patient populations. e. Adheres to professional perioperative nursing standards, including AORN, ASPAN, and AAMI, educating self with current standard changes and updates. f. Provides compassionate care while maintaining professional boundaries. g. Participates in activities that promote personal and professional development i.e. participates on committee, attends in-services, conferences. h. Ensures that annual competencies and other mandatory education are completed within the designated time frames. 12.
Leadership:
a. Assists peers and support staff with decision making and problem solving. b. Participates in peer review process by providing input directly to the manager or designate responsible for performance management. c. Creates an environment conducive to effective working relationships whether functioning as a primary care giver, relief charge, mentoring and precepting students or staff, or supervising and delegating tasks to appropriate staff, as defined by the Montana State Board of Nursing. d. Supports and embraces change to improve environment of care and workplace. Participates in staff meetings. e. Promotes autonomous nursing practice. 13.
Quality Improvement:
a. Actively participates in quality and process improvement efforts. b. Identifies opportunities to improve clinical care practices and overall nursing efficiency and promotes high quality nursing practice. c. Uses system and community resources wisely. d. Able to articulate unit-based quality improvement projects including desired/expected outcomes. 14.
Conflict Resolution Skills:
a. Recognizes sources of conflict and understands conflict resolution techniques with respect to patients, families, subordinates, peers, supervisors, and physicians. b. Interacts with colleagues, both within the organization and in the community, utilizing accountable, respectful, team-focused behavior.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in an operating room setting
  • Multi-specialty background preferred
  • Proficient in specimen collection processing and handling
